bahrain airport - just a change of plane

Out of the widow Bahrain looks like lots of dust with skyscrapers on. Inside it is a strange mix of Christmas decorations lots of tour groups who look like they might be going on pilgramage, 25k rolexes in duty free, mcdonalds, costa and free internet to keep us amused. We've got 2hrs to kill - body clocks already out of sink! Am going to try and learn some nepalese from a podcast.

Desert Bus Ride from Al Khobar(Dammam) to Jeddah

... lap of the journey was very picturesque, with a totally different desert scenario. It was basically a mountainous desert terrain. The highway took us along myriad ranges, and at one point I even saw a plateau out yonder.

It was at around 3:30PM that we finally cruised into Jeddah, and I saw Manoj had come to receive me. Well, he and his family looked after me and gave a great time, and Jeddah was a great city................... but that would be another story- a story of a city!

Homeward bound via Bahrain

... to the west and Qatar to the east. We didn't know where it was until we were due to fly home via the island. It's interesting to note the road bridge (King Fahd Causeway) which links the two countries and is 17 miles long. Soon to be surpassed by the Bahrain to Qatar 'Friendship Bridge' currently under construction at 25 miles - it will be the longest bridge in the world.

And back to Dubai!

Not much - just waiting at the airport for the flight! Bahrain was both nicer and more boring than I thought, the weather is a lot more forgiving but it's not worth more than about 3 days exploration tops.. Unless you like to get really nittygritty :P
Trip to Turkey

... Middle East. The Hotel is small but when I arrived there it was dark as it is winter now. There was no chance to go for a city tour. My room was directly above a discotheque and of course the incessant pounding of the music kept me awake for most part of the night and early morning. In the morning I managed to look around the hotel vicinity and was marvelled at a building called Harbour Mall.

We Depart Riyadh and (eventually) get to Bahrain

... up, the shredded tire off and the new tire on. Now for the next part... After hitting the bank machine at the gas station (in Saudi, most ATMs are built for cars. You drive up, do your business, and leave. Unlike Canada or the States, you also pay no extra fees for using another bank's ATM. It is un-Islamic to charge for this, al Humdullalah!), I headed to the gas station up near Dawn that also has a tire/battery/wheel alignment shop, oil and radiator change shop ...

Bahrain is insain!

... Jetty," Caterpillars frantically digging the shore up from the sea and loading it into dump trucks, the water covered with a fine oil slick. It's all pure fantasy here. All the businesspeople--it just seems like they're playing. And we're the suckers who make it seem like all this nice-looking stuff matters. Give me the dirty streets of Cairo, fluorescent bulbs that only get turned on late at night, the plastic chairs and the shaky televisions playing Premier League football ...

... the King Fahad Causeway, which crosses over to Saudi Arabia. Along the way, we discovered that most of the roads have periodic traffic-slowing humps which happen to be really inconvenient and really slow things down. In other words, they work, and they probably contribute to the large number of car repair shops we've seen. In Budaiya, we looked for the Anatolia Turkish restaurant. Instead, we found a little place ("Middle East Restaurant") which seemed to have a booming take ...
