Pam's Visit: City #2 Thanksgiving!!

... the Hauptbahnhof. We took the train to Wolfsburg to catch the ICE to Berlin. The trains can travel 125 mph on conventional tracks and 174 mph on high-speed tracks, it was like riding in an airplane it was so fast!! The ride to Berlin only took 1 hour! Then we had to find our Hostel which took a while since it was a 10 minute walk from the Ostbahnhof train station in Berlin.

Pam's Visit: City #2 Day 1

We headed to the Hamburg Hauptbahnhof to get tickets back to Braunshweig. We stopped in Hannover for 1 hour and we quickly walked through some of the shopping section. We were tired when we finally arrived so we hung out in my room for a while just relaxing. We hung out with all of the URI students in Weststadt and it was a lot of fun.

"Wetten, dass?"

... be in such a huge crowd. It was going to take us forever to get back to Weststadt but Mason was a genius and suggested we go to the S-Bahn stop before the really crowded one to make sure we got a seat. I have never seen the S-bahn that crowded, even the Germans had to tell each other that there was no room for more people to come in. It felt so nice to sit down since everyone’s legs hurt from standing so long and after a long day of walking in Bremen and the 5 hr train ride.

Halloween in Germany!!

I went to get coffee in the Schloss with Wendy then we shopped around for some costumes. Wendy was a Berliner Kindl kid which was so cute!! I was Mutti (a mom) apron, wooden spoon and bandaids. Drew was an army cook with the huge fly swater or a burger flipper from the Euro store, Shawn was Santa Claus. Mason was a contractor. Dave was some creepy guy with a top hat. They don't really have very ...

Nature Walk with Wendy

It was a beautiful day outside so Wendy and I decided to take a walk in the Nature conservatory area on the edge of the city. It took a long time to get there (40 minutes) but we walked around for about 2 hours and saw some beautiful landscape. It was nice to get away from the city and enjoy the Fall colors.

That night there was a volleyball event at the Sports-zentrum. Soth, Steve, Shawn, Drew and I went to just ...

Graduation

Today we graduated from Summer School yaay! We had a mini ceremony where we received our papers saying the hours we completed and our grades. The teachers each gave a small speech but at least it was fairly short. I passed and got 6 credits towards my German major ...

mini Dorf trip

... part of the village and went to eat, ate a Döner box. Then we walked to the Herzog-August-Biblothek and Lessinghaus for a tour by Librarians. It was very interesting and you could tell that these Women knew so much since they are surounded by books all day everyday. Then we took the bus back to Braunschweig. The village was easy to get to and I would definitely go back!

Fischers Fritz fischt frische Fische...

After we got back to Braunschweig from Salzgitter we had a trip through the woods to a Fischhaus. Theres (one of our teachers) has a friend who owns a "fish farm" and was cooking us dinner. We took the bus from the theater to this woodsy area near the fast train and took a 30 min walk to the fish house, which was beautiful. It felt just like the woods in PA, deer like ...

Salzgitter Steel plant

... of steel were so hot and heavy!

We listened in German which got hard after about 1 hour because focusing was difficult. It was probably a lot more interesting to the Civil and Mechanical Engineers. In any case it was a neat place to visit but I definitely did not feel like they have too many other safety precautions in place. I stayed between the "yellow walking lines" but sometimes I felt as if my shoes would melt from the hot floor!

Long walk round the town

... On my way I also passed by a typical Baroque garden (Ulricher Garten) with its 18th century dovecote tower and the amazing "Goslar Cathedral". As an independent imperial convent, it was part of the palace district. It is a remnant of the church of St. Simon and Judas (11th century) founded by Henrich III. It was actually demolished (called desolate) in 1819 and only the porch survives. Architectural remains including the throne of Salian and Hohenstauren emperors are housed in ...
