2 hours to catch flight!

... spent too much time investigating. Aside from a few months of an Introductory German course that I failed and dropped, I certainly have no 1st hand experience with their culture.
Planning, plotting, and practicing is how I will accomplish this irresponsible feat of travel and confusion.
Godspeed and good luck I've wished myself well in advance.
Who knows?
Maybe I'll never even make it out of Frankfurt...

Rainy day in Worms

... because I could not use a flash, except when I was sure no one was looking). This was the first astounding example of German Romanesque architecture (with touches of Gothic design) we are going to see. This Cathedral was completed during the late 12th century, with a few additions during the following two centuries. It is magnificent, and my photos do not do it justice in the slightest. The vaulted ceilings peak at over 120 feet, and much of the stonework is ...

The first day of my 2nd escape

... Well here's the story:

After having met a bunch of design students "by chance" (still don't believe in chance though ;) at a party,

[to be continued]

I reckon this trip will help me to make some awesome pictures.

Stopover

It was sooooo cold in Frankfurt, we didn't want to spend much time here since we had no winter clothing. WE got in late, went to our hotel, then back to the airport to get our flight to Bangkok moved up. We though it would be at 8 that night, but they managed to get us on the next flight out, which was pretty much within the hour. Woohooo! I also kept speaking Italian in Germany... so confused with all the languages.

Dinner with Nadine and Flo

... the hookers seemed to still be waiting for the American GI’s. It was raining and dreary, but soon to change when Erik’s cousin, Nadine, and boyfriend, Flo, picked us up to take us to their home town outside the big city near the Tanus Mountains. We had a wonderful visit, them taking us to a traditional German restaurant where we tasted fresh apple wine. We topped it off with a visit to their apartment. What a great way to end the trip!

Monday in Darmstadt Central

... time. The fair that I had visited my first day was ending that day. When it finally got dark, after nine o'clock, there was a fireworks display at the fairgrounds. The fairgrounds are not far from Christiane's house, so we all went out in the backyard to watch. I love fireworks, and these were nice ones, because they were so pretty as fireworks always are, and because I was in Germany, and it was my last night in Darmstadt. It was like a fireworks display just for me!

So close to the land of Oz

... the maze. The first to find her would be able to marry her. Just another piece of useless information!)
Where was I...? Oh, right. So I walked through the garden and then went into the hotel for a hot chocolate. It was the tastiest hot choc and also the most expensive one that I had whilst in Europe. After that I knew that I had to catch the bus at 6 so I walked to the bus stop. To get home I needed to catch the bus at 6, a train at Millingen, a local ...

The Brass Monkey

She Said: This blog isn't really Darmstadt per se, but more so a series of daytrips from Darmstadt. A close family friend, Ed (who is a cousin on my mom's side), offered us a place to stay at his house about thirty minutes outside of Frankfurt. Anxious to see more of Germany, we took a van from Cesky Krumlov to Austria, where we connected with a train to Frankfurt. From there, we hopped on a regional train to Darmstadt where Ed picked us up and took us to his place. I hadn't ...

Darmstadt arrival

Hello, I arrived in europe safely, and then took a long train ride with a lot of soccer fans to germany. I had to sit in a smoking car because it was so crowded. They were all pretty excited and talked soccer the whole ride. Everywhere you go people are totally decked out in their countries colors. I´m wondering what all the women do during the world cup though, they are ...

Frankfurt by Night

... you’d never do in the US, where freeways scream right over and around the centers of towns, frequently chopping up neighborhoods in the process. In Europe they stop at the edges, strictly a point-to-point sprint. You still have to wind your way through the cities, usually.
