... turtle is from Africa and was found in someones luggage. These animals can't be returned to where they are from because they may have caught a bacteria or infection here. They can't be released because they may do damage to the ecosystem here (think of the movie the terminal, Tom hanks was a man without a country and so are these animals.
The other animals you see are domestic to here but require treatement to get back in the wild or care because they can't survive on their own ...
We got up early this morning and looked out to a very grey and foggy Halifax. We were due to go on one of the excursions this morning; to the Titanic cemeteries. It might seem strange to come on holiday and spend half a day looking at grave stones, but there were 300+ victims of the Titanic disaster whose bodies, a lot of them unidentified, were brought to Halifax.
We visited three cemeteries in total; a Jewish one, ...

... then walked around. It was much more impressive and larger than I expected. There were many young men and women dressed in era-appropriate costumes that were stationed around the Citadel to explain their "job." We were especially impressed with one who explained the difference between a musket and rifle and how the transition to rifles led to changes in warfare and military dress.
