... homeless people everywhere, there wasn't a soul. We considered that this might be because San Diego has a large Spanish population, and therefore a more religious one, which might mean everyone was at church, but this was just speculation on our parts. The bus stop was apparently a hub for the homeless people, many of whom were searching through bins for plastic bottles to trade in (you can get about 5c a bottle in California, along with some other states), which made for ...

We strolled along the waterfront for a while then headed back to Todd's place. We played a board game before packing up to bring Tannis back home. Home in California - it feels odd to say that. Along the way we stopped at a grocery store and picked her up a ...

I thought we were going to Old Town!

A travel blog entry by kenny.mccallum

We were up sharp for breakfast and sitting at the tram station for 9:30 waiting on the team to Old Town, sitting on the platform and Elaine decides she want to go to Mexico after all so a change of platform and we are on the team to the border crossing, we walked over the bridge through a security gate and we are in Mexico, we walk in to the immigration room, we handed over our passports and the guy says to us, "what do you ...

... for dinner. I cant recommend a visit to this zoo enough. Next day we took the coastal road to LA via Newport, Laguna etc - kinda cool. We are staying in a dodgy part of LA near the airport - its so **** but does the job at a cheap price. We unpacked and tidied up the car and packed. Next day we quickly ducked out to buy some shoes but not much else was happening. Packing was a mission - we had to get an extra bag!

Historical Traveler Reviews Ramada Plaza San Diego

    Old Dump

    from NatTaggart

I stayed at this Ramada approximately three weeks in June '05. Another reviewer thought this place "looked new." This person must work in the hotel's marketing department. It is not new, things are worn, the bar was a dimly lit mess that charged me a different rate every night for a double Gin and Tonic. The TV would always come on with the volume so loud you would spill your cocktail. The street access is inconvenient at best. Parking is tight, don't get back too late. Make sure your room is nowhere near the bar on weekends, as the band really cranks up. Cell phones could not get a signal in my first floor room, I spent evenings standing in the parking lot to make calls.

    Just average

    from LAGirl

The hotel is located in an area with multiple hotels and is close to Old Town San Diego (good Mexican food) and the Fashion Valley Mall (excellent shopping). I stayed in the back addition to the hotel and the room smelled a little weird and the family next door to us was rather loud. I would recommend staying in the main building of the hotel. Other than that, nothing too extraordinary.

    Delightful Service

    from anonymous

I was in San Diego on a family emergency. The staff at the Ramada Plaza Hotel was more than accomidating. I need more assistance than the average traveler, and they were happy to assist in any way they could. I will never use another hotel in San Diego because they offered me such personalized service.

    Great place!

    from LeckG

We had an excellent time! The room was clean and it looks new! We had a great dinner at Tickled Trout restaurant by the hotel and the room service was also superb! We will definitely use Ramada Hotel again for our future trip!

Will not return to this hotel

    from anonymous

We stayed here overnight before a SD Chargers game. Worst place to stay! The hotel smelled of smoke. The TV didn't work. We were put right next to the elevator. Our neighbors took a shower at 4:30 in the morning and we heard every bit of it. The walls are VERY thin and you can hear everyone coming and going. The resturant looked dingy. We will look into another location for our upcoming games.

    Close to Sea World

    from anonymous

This hotel is close to Sea World. The rooms are a little small and there is no breakfast, although the front desk gave me coupons for breakfast. We ended up at Perry's down the street which was FANTASTIC and worth the 15 minute wait. The big-brown-haired doorman was the worst I have ever seen, wouldn't even open the front door for me when I was carrying 2 suitcases and a playpen by myself. The front desk staff was friendly and offered to get me the reduced tickets to Sea World.

The other concierge was really friendly and got me the name and address of a mexican restaurant nearby in Oldtown, so that was nice.

    Not quite the whole story

    from anonymous

My stay lasted approximately 2 hours. The first room that I checked-in had ants. The second room was messy with the same ant problems. The staff was understanding and provided a refund.

Everything was good but Harbor Pizza

    from anonymous

I agree with Jeff. The hotel was nice. It was a little small but it was definetly comfortable. The staff went out of their way to make us feel at home. The location of the hotel met my needs as well. What I didnt like was my situation with Harbor Pizza. The food I ordered took well over an hour and a half to arive. When I paid the driver, he ran to make the elevator. Not only were the portions REALLY small, but it was cold and the order incomplete. When I called back to have them fix my issues, I got nothing but arguments about how it's not their problem. Not only were they the RUDIST bunch of employees, but it took me 3 hours to get a hold of the manager. The manager(owner) made excuses but was apologetic. He offered to send me a fresh pizza(at 11:30 at night)and I told him that wasnt good enough. Since I did not eat any of the cold food, I asked for a full refund. He agreed, took down my name/address and told me to call the pizza shop if I didnt get my money. It's been almost a month now and I have called the pizza shop everyday for the last 2 weeks. I keep getting the run around and have yet to get a hold of him again. The empoyees are rude and have no regard for customer service. If I were the Ramada, or any hotel around there, I would not allow Harbor Pizza to solicate their customers any more.

    Convenient

    from star60

This hotel is convenient to Old Town and Mission Bay beaches as well as Sea World and upon arrival we were given very good directions from the hotel to attractions , shopping etc.

Our room was great for the price.

The restaurant breakfast at the Tickled Trout was NOT good . We found a much better restaurant called Perry's.

The hotel is well managed and well maintained but could use a a facelift. The restaurant is dull in EVERY way .

The staff was very helpful. The pool is nice but unattended and one night we were bothered by young men very loudly throwing each other around.

Good deal for the area & amenities.

    from Jeff42

1/24/04 overnight stay. I was shopping for the best price online and got a rate of $63 which is cheaper than the $80 most other places wanted. The hotel is closer to a 3 star than a 2 star in quality and amenities. Fast check-in and keyed entry to get inside the hotel and to your room. The room was clean and very well set up with everything a 3 star hotel would offer: coffee maker, iron and board, safe, in-room movies and video games, lots of free toiletries including the ever coveted sewing kit, and plenty of thick cushy towels. The only complaint I have is the size of the room and bathroom. They were both on the small side. If you travel with more than one rolling suitcase, you will be tripping over your luggage. One nice thing was the vanity area which had its own sink and a much larger counter top than the main bathroom sink and counter. Don't order pizza from Harbor Pizza. The quality is low, the portions small and the prices high. Room service is available from the on site restaurant and bar. We had breakfast there and it was very good for the price. There is a separate tower at the rear of the property. Get a room here to avoid the noise from people coming and going at all hours.
