... ago. Next on the notable town list was Marceline, Mo which was the boyhood home of Walt Disney. The house still stands and is occupied by a farm family who chooses not to allow any access. Then the small town of Laclede, Mo which was the boyhood home of General John Pershing. Second stop was in Chillicothe, MO we gassed up, snacked up, and got back on the road. We're hitting the road today from Kansas to Colorado for day 4 of straight highway driving. Our campsite in the middle of the woods in Ohio was beautiful but very remote. Then we drove all day and evening to an even more remote site in the middle of the woods in Missouri. It was a little clearing in huge middle of the woods in a state conservation area. The not so Great Western Inn

My fearless leader who took the wheel after we left Topeka didn't check the gas gauge. We made it to Manhattan with about 2 miles to spare (according to the truck). We spent a lot of time "nursing it" and coasted down a 2 mile hill which probably saved us. Once we got to the gas station we messed around for about 2 minutes because dad didn't know if the guy at the pump was leaving or not. We are back on the road now and have about 30 minutes until we get to the hotel.

Leaving St. Louis mid-afternoon we drove the entire state of Missouri and stopped 125 miles into Kansas at Junction City for the night. Nearby was Fort Riley army base (but we were pooped after driving so we didn't see it!). The town was very ...
