... date nuclear carrier? We got on base in Norfolk and we were actually able to board the ship but only to the main loading deck. You could see the young men and women so excited to be on dry land, they were with their families, moms and dads, wives and children. Reminded me of when Gary came home from a long cruise. Good times. I really wanted to see the ship arrive on Sunday but they kept their arrival time quiet ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Ramada On The Beach Virginia Beach
Bugs in room & very hot!!
Hated It. July 13, 2004. Will never go back. Our first room was extremely hot. The air conditioner was not strong enough despite supposedly being new. My whole family could not sleep past 5:30am (when the sun came up) due to the heat. We were not overly sensitive to the heat because we had just spent 8 glorious days in a Hotel at (even hotter) Myrtle Beach with a room on the top floor (14th) and were extremely comfortable.
We thought it would be nice to check out Virginia Beach for a couple of nights on our way home from Myrtle Beach.
When we complained about the A/C, the maintenance man said the A/C unit was new and was not broken. He cleaned the A/C filters and said it might help cool off the room. He told us to just keep the drapes closed or ask for another room. Keeping the heavy drapes closed made the room completely dark and since two lights were not working, our "oceanview" room felt like a dark dank cave. We went out for lunch to let the room cool off, but it did not. So we asked to be moved to another room.
The second room's A/C unit was different. It was either ice cold & "migraine headache loud" (right beside the head of the bed) or when turned down even slightly made this room too hot as well.
Also in the second room our kids noticed a black beetle like bug crawling around on the carpet near the garbage. I thought it was a cockroach. My husband killed it, wrapped it in a tissue and brought it to the front desk. They said not to worry it was not a cockroach, it was a water bug (like that was supposed to make us feel better!!).
At this point we had already lost several hours and were dreading looking for another hotel for one more night . We asked the management if they could at least reduce the price of the room since would did not sleep well the night before due to excessive heat and now there are bugs in our room. They said they would work on something for us. They showed up at our door with a toy sand pail and shovel (my kids are all over 12 years old) and a couple of snacks. We thought this was in addition to a discount. The next day we found out that there was no additional discount, the sand pail was the compensation!!! Unbelievable.
Additionally the indoor pool water was very cold. We own a pool at home so I am quite familiar with what 80 degrees feels like and even though they posted a pool temperature of 80, it was not. Since there was a thunderstorm going on and the beach was closed, this pool was the only thing to do other than sit in the miserable room. I got into the tiny so called hot (warm) tub to warm up. It was full of very small children who also found the pool too cold to swim in.
On another note the rooms did not have any kind of refridgerators, not even a mini bar fridge. The Ice machines could not keep up and were weren't always able to have ice.
The hotel does have a locally famous restaurant which the hotel seems to use to intice guests. Unfortunately it's the ONLY good thing about the hotel.
From the moment we walked into the lush lobby. to the day we regrettably had to check out we encountered nothing but the BEST service! Staff was courteous and went above and beyond, rooms were large and CLEAN, housekeeping was always prompt and pleasant, and the restaurant .... words cannot describe the wonderful experience we had at their restaurant! I will forever be a Ramada guest everytime I go to Va. Bch!!!!
Overall a nice experience
Except for the fact that the place is in dire need of new pillows, and just off hurricane Isabel, my wife and I were pleased with our 5 night stay. The staff was friendly and the rooms were clean. I asked for an extra day and was charged at my original rate, not the current one which was 3 times higher! Thanks Ramada. I wouldn't hesitate to come back
We were supposed to receive coupons for breakfast, got them the day before we left. The beds were horrible. The room was so hot, even after they supposedly changed the ac unit, we had to keep the curtains closed, a lot of good to get an ocean view room!! The positive side was the staff was very nice, housekeeping was great! Unfortunately we will not return to Ramada on the Beach!
We usually stay at Holiday Inns. After this stay, I am going back to them. The spa did not have working jets for 5 1/2 days. The pool had a capacity of 27 people. Pretty small for an eight story hotel. The pool and spa were off the parking lot. The room was unimpressive with 3 drawers to put clothing and 4 hangers to hang them on. The parking was in a structure across the street and half way down the block. The covers around the faucet handles in the bathroom were not attached to the wall. The bathroom was pretty small at about 6 feet by 8 feet. The laundry facilities is approximately 6 feet by 7 feet (one washer and two dryers). It was probably 90 degrees.
I feel that for $186 a night they could have done alot better. These accomodations would have been more suitable for $70 a night.
It Was Okay
We spent a week at the Ramada Inn on the Beach. The hotel is fine, however the rooms could use a little bit of redecorating. Our rooms were on the third floor over Mahi Mahs, and we were able to enjoy the nightly bands at the 7th street stage. One note, you can hear the music from inside the rooms, it is that loud. We might consider staying there again, but considering the price, we'd probably opt for one of the newer hotels.
All in all a great experience
We go here often....to have a front row seats for the Festival of Lights after our Thanksgiving exhaustion and to Christmas shop at some of the upscale shops. (Even the Hecht's here is a flagship one.) We go every summer and sometimes twice a summer. The 'band' one reviewer criticized...actually it's always stopped at 10 whenever we were there...I believe there's even a noise ordinance so it has to. And it starts about 7 or 8. The island music and beach music is really great for the atmosphere so we enjoy the free music. And we don't really think of it as a 'band' per se....it's usually 1-3 musicians. The hotel is great. Nothing in the line of courteous greetings from most of the desk staff, nor any smiles, nor pleasant goodbye/ tell your friends about us/hope you enjoyed your stay/etc. at check-out....but people so seldom care about anything anymore and it's like that all over. But the lobby is attractive; the restaurant has great food and is the top ranked one in the area. The breakfast buffet is a good deal, and delicious food. Lunch is the best deal, we think....the special is about $5....seating is beachfront. Can't get better than that. (Oh, don't plan on using the restaurant's coupon from the Vistior's Guide for a percentage off for lunch if you buy the special...the coupon doesn't list any restrictions but...again the attitude...the manager didn't honor what he advertized.) It's less crowded than the larger, 3 bedroom condo areas, and less crowded than the middle boardwalk/honky tonk area. You can walk to the inlet, to lots of great restaurants; there's valet parking. All in all really good.
OK location, but the didn't mention the band that plays outside on the boardwalk so loud that you can't hear each other in the room. Most parking is not on their property, so when we had to go to the car, it was a block away. Not very good for families, more suited for young singles. Food in Mahi Mahi's was good, but we had to wait over 45 minutes for a table. Again, better for younger people with no children.
Beach and view were great.
We were very impressed with this hotel. The staff was wonderfully friendly and the room was very clean, as was the rest of the hotel. The access to the beach is wonderful and the view is tremendous. There was live music offered every night in the courtyard adjacent to the hotel.
This area of the beach and boardwalk was easy access to everything but was not so busy that you were surrounded by crowds at all times. The busboys and valets were prompt courteous and the whole weekend was wonderful!
Good Place to stay
It was a very nice experience for me and my friends, the people were very nice and polite and very helpful. When we arrived there check in time was a 4:00pm, but we arrived two hours early (I got the times mixed up), but they let us check in anyway, I was very impressed. The staff was very knowlegable of the area and getting questions answered was absolutely no problem.
At $122 per night, I feel it was a very good price for that much comfort.
The rooms are very comfortable and if you are not happy then they will do everything they can to make you happy. When we had a leaky AC hose on the balcony, we called the front desk to have is fixed and 10 minutes later there was a service technican knocking at the door. This is a great place to have a vacation.
