The road today traversed the heart of oil country which was quite evident with all the trucks, work vehicles, and communities of work camps. The road also had the most 6 to 9 percent uphills and downhills we have had. We slowed down a lot of vehicles with not being able to drive much over 25 to 30 on some of the hills. ... as the Alcan (Alaska/Canada) Military Highway. It served as the main supply highway to the military bases in Alaska during WWII. It is really a pretty nice road, but it does have a few stretches where it is pretty rough. Forty three years ago when I made my first trip to Banff, they told us that the Alcan was full of ruts and some parts were gravel. Day 12: Bear Poop
