Observations for today: Long flight, no internet, great city, Tijuana so close, border patrol, jet lag
Day 24 We wanted to get a feel for San Diego today. This is pretty high on our list of places we'd like to live or at least from what we've heard. And everyone has made it clear that they would come and visit or maybe just move here with us. So, it seemed important to give it a good look. We started off by walking around the gaslamp district a bit …

Historical Traveler Reviews Ramada Inn & Suites Gaslamp/Convention Center San Diego
And this is a hotel? You have got to be kidding, we were never so fooled in our life. As soon as we turned the corner we all said oh my goodness!! that's a hotel? Well there were only 5 parking spaces and for $15 for parking at the hotel, and they would "tow" your car 2 blocks away. That meant anytime you had to use the car they would have to go and get it! Bull! The elevator is not what you think. It took us 15 minutes to get down the elevator. One of our family members is handicapped and cannot walk downstairs. Here's the front desk reply. "Oh well when someone goes up to the 10th floor it takes a while for it to get back down" The elevator itself is like a 8 by 8 jail cell. NO LIE. We got the rooms with a courtyard view. AHHH! It looked like a trapped up jail yard! Plus the fact the building has lots of grafetti. The bedrooms are nasty with old radiators and the beds just sink. The bathroom is also like an 8 by 8 jail cell. It was a terrible experience. Its so depressing that we called another hotel and thank goodness we were able to get in there. We left within 15 minutes. NO JOKE. Never will we stay at any Ramada again.
After about staying here about four times it seems the service has slipped. Room not too clean and the hot water in the shower cuts off. Staff indifferent about complaints. It seems that Ramada does not care about this property much. Will not be returning.
we stayed at the hotel for 3 days and 2 nigts. It was my anniversary. I ordered food from the restraunt it made me sick, literally. i got sick the 2nd night i was there. It was horrible. We stayed in a suite.More like 2 small rooms. I dont beleve i would stay there again, but it was an experience
Prison Cell, or Hotel Room?
I had read that the rooms were small, but it felt more like a prison cell. the room is barely big enough for the queen bed, the bathroom is tiny and only has a shower ( which by the way if you were over 200 lbs you would not fit in that tiny shower ), and the water kept turning hot and cold. I would recommend you stay elsewhere...
The only good things are the location and the price, which I would say spend the extra money and stay somewhere nice instead. And although the location was good, it was VERY noisy and hard to sleep.
Location superb, hotel would have been fabulous in its hey day, now it is just well worn and not particularly clean. We didn't pay a huge amount so our expectations were not that high, but nothing could have prepared me for what we received. The staff were not friendly at all, the room was tiny and I mean tiny - I had to side step to get into bed.
Could be better...
My fiance and I stayed here for 3 days and 2 nights. We enjoyed the view from the rooftop overlooking downtown San Diego at night. When my fiance's complaint was that the water would turn hot and cold instantly while he was showering. The shower stall was barely big enough for one person. I had to turn off the water in order to shave my legs! Also, we could clearly hear a man next to us hacking in the mornings!
We were completely mislead
The only thing renovated in that hotel was the lobby. The room they gave us was so small two of us couldn't pass each other. It was altogether a horrible experience. We were supposed to stay for five nights. We stayed for one night and moved to another hotel. On your scale, it rates a 0.
Not a bad deal
I was attending a conference at the Convention Center. The Ramada Inn Gaslamp was only 6 short blocks away. Horton Plaza is around the corner. Restaurants, shopping all around. The room was indeed tiny, but so what. It had a roof fan, AC and the windows opened, too. I paid $50 through an Internet deal. The place dates from the 1910's and it has some character, usually not found in chains. It was very clean. The street below was a bit noisy with revelers, but it was not too bad.
Also, they have breakfast brunch in the gorgeous old hotel bar - for only $4.99, and starting at 5 am - great for those early flights. My guess is that most Europeans would enjoy this hotel.
Do not stay here
Room was tiny, and windows were bricked up so no daylight. Staff unhelpful. Adjoining building is undergoing major renovations. We changed hotels as soon as possible.
Beware of the description!
The reviews written about this hotel were too good to be true! The "suite" consisted of 2 very small rooms, and a bathroom with only a shower! Certainly no plush robes!! The sink dripped all night, and a huge bug of some kind crawled up the wall !!! I can't believe Ramada put their name on this property!
