... by the National Park Service. That's right--the National Parks are operating again!! This was excellent timing. The New River was designated a National River in 1978, and there are four visitor centers along the Gorge. They showed a good film about the history and geology of the area, and a park volunteer gave us some great advice on where to park and how to negotiate the big crowds tomorrow on Bridge Day.
... our senior discount. Sampling one of the Wisconsin varieties on grilled cheese sandwiches was a delicious experience...it's going to be hard to go back to Kraft!
Speaking of going back, we figure that with a long driving
day tomorrow, we might make it home. We will send one last posting to let
everyone know where we are there safe and sound.

... 4 days! And last time I was in the holar, I had no phone reception and very limited internet access! It was like living in the old days! lol Not that those things are important... I'm just not used to being in the house with no technology, no car and now a 10 year old who cannot wait for me to visit... But I can honestly say it was an absolute delight. She is an amazing, well behaved, happy and talented ...
... amazing valley on mountains. You can really see why they call the Kentucky Appalachians the smoky mountains. The fog and clouds draped over the mountain tops of green masses of trees. The town of Pikeville was sunken into a narrow valley in the secluded mountains. Great location, just not for cyclists with thousands of coal trucks passing through daily. What to do? Finally, much to our dismay, we were forced to rent a Uhaul and drive into Virginia. Live to ride another day! ...
We left Lexington this morning is rain. It is our first morning of rain on this trip and maybe only our second day of rain before lunch. We are heading to the town of Hiltons Kentucky where the Carter Family Fold is located.
