Sunday, Oct. 27th. We had a wonderful drive through the Arkansas Mt's along route 270 in the western part of the state. Lots of autumn colors, beautiful mountain scenery, good road. Just the time we crossed over into Oklahoma things changed a bit! The road was in poor shape and there wasn't the attention to a litter free state that we had experienced in Arkansas.

... as a neighbor (we found out later that Cliff, the guy driving us around today, had been given three donkeys, kept one, found a home for the other, and is trying to re-home this last one).
The next morning, I wandered around the fairgrounds as John got ready and discovered that we also had three horses as neighbors too! Two of them immediately came over to me and let me pet them as they searched my person for any sort of treats. I came back a bit ...
... the stomach to try that out! While the town was less than desirable with strip malls, hardware stores and fast food joints lining the roads, the state park and Dardanelle lake were beautiful. We found ourself a picnic table in the shade with a nice cool breeze so we barely felt the 39 degree heat! We got back on our way and rolled up to our campsite, after a quick stop at the Oklahoma information center to interact with some ...
... are the top of a plateau because all the trees are gone and you just have these rolling hills of grass. Once you cross the Oklahoma border, you are back into the treeline. Because it took over an hour and half to get lunch (note to self ... don't eat at the Chili's in Alexandria, LA), we didn't pull into our hotel until after 8pm. Made for a very long day. Two more long days of driving ... but it will be worth it in the ...
