Probably a few years before CIA meant Central Intelligence Agency it meant Culinary Institute of America. When I was a kid we had family on my father's side who lived in the Hudson Valley not too far from Hyde Park. I began liking to cook already at a pretty young age and was fascinated by the big building we passed on Route 9 north of Poughkeepsie that I was told was a college for chefs.

We also had the joy of dealing with 12 year old stubbornness and *****iness, young crushes and sometimes heart breaking stories about home. I think this encampment provided a great experience for both counselors and campers to understand other people’s differences.

Not only was today the day that we left Wal-Mart, it was also, finally, after months of build-up, the day of the 2008 Presidential Election. Whilst having breakfast & packing up we had been listening to the radio reports of long queues at the polling stations all across the States and so we were quite excited & eager to get on the road so that we might see some of it for ourselves.
