World's Largest Dino....seriously!

... that my folks are major fans of good food, they get pretty excited about it! After we said goodbye, we set off on our way. We drove through downtown Edmonton and my parents said it had grown a lot since the last time they were here. When we got out into the country, dad let me get behind the wheel for a little while, he said that kids in Alberta ...

... the park, beside the river, where bikers, skate boarders, and runners, exercised on this majestic day.

We entered Drumheller, late evening. The long shadows cast across the yellow fields of canola just before it added extra contrast to the gray, brown, badland canyon, we descended into. There was just enough light for Olivia and I to scan the horizon and get a great view of the town of Drumheller as we stood inside the mouth of the world's largest Tyrannosaurus Rex. What a site.

Dinosaurs galore

263 km, a short day but a very windy one. After we left the Rockies, it immediately started getting very flat - and very very windy.

Thunderstorms tonight so the decision to stay somewhere indoors was easy.

I think the reason why we don't have cable tv at home is so we can binge on all the tv programs for free when we're staying in a motel. Survivorman, CNN, The Bounty Hunter, Wife Swap... who needs sleep eh?

... started the task.

As I wandered around I watched the children at the zoo. They were very intent on seeing everything that was there. The connection seemed to be there more for them then I have seen in some of the bigger fancier zoos, where it is more clinical and the animals don't seem to acknowledge the people on the outside.

The camels were a great hit with the kids and adults alike. They would ...

Drumheller also boasts Canada's biggest reptile collection, the stated goal of educating people about these critters. Education doesn't feature strongly to my mind, and the prisons are unattractively maintained so that I doubt that many people would come away with an improved opinion of the animals. The frogs looked hungry. We drove out to the so ...

We then arrived at the dinosaur museum in a place called Drumheller and wow the bad lands were so scary i refused to set foot in them, so off into the museum we went and had a look for the dinosaurs, i was just mucking around with a huge fish by ...

Hiking the Alberta Badlands

After sticking around Jen's Sister's place in Airdrie (north of Calgary) for a week or so, we shot out to Drumheller to check out the badlands. The badlands is a dried up sea smack in the middle of the praries and foothills. The drive into Drumheller is like driving to another planet. After an hour of wheat fields and cattle, you drop into this desert moonscape. Drumheller is apperently the ...

Dinosaurs and Hoodoos

Before leaving Regina, we had to do one more thing ... take a picture of the Big Moose.

We arrived in Calgary, AB around 10pm where we were graciously accommodated by Patrick McClean (& his wife, Estrella with their daughter, Aisha) - a contact graciously introduced to me by our friend, Matt Macmillan. They recently moved into their suburban home and were still settling in ... however, we had the basement, complete with sleeping ...

Drumheller & Beyond

... village of Rosedale we walked across the Red Deer River on a suspension bridge, one of the remaining relics the mining company left behind. In the same territory that coal was found, there are unusual landforms called hoodoos that were sculpted by the wind and rain. Unfortunately, humans have not been able to just look at them, but insist on standing on the fragile structures. At an ...

... sometimes falling down the egg chute. One worker developed this safety device - he welded a horseshoe (upside down) to the side of the screen. He could then place his boot in this hoop, giving him a good foothold. Three Polish workers were being introduced to the site one day, and being very superstitious workers, immediately left the site, as upside down horseshoes are extremely unlucky. Soon, all of the tipple workers were ...
