      • I was driving by the dessert , on a town called tehachapi.
      • I saw this guy on the side of a street, all dusty and asking for a ride.
      • His name was Pedro Martinez, a immigrant from Baja California,Mexico.
      • He came to United States to earn some money but he got lost in the dessert. He told me all his story about his life and family.

Around then, we take off for the heat of the day; we start up again around 4pm and hike until we find water or a sweet campsite. Today was one of those sweet campsite days. I'll post some more pics when I get better signal.

This morning I snoozed and didn't get up until 8:00. I grabbed just a banana so I could be ready for a task right away. Everyone was still so silent! Then Thomas and I got a calm, stern talking-to for staying up talking past 10:30 last night. Then I spent three whole hours making small, round planters out of newspaper. This takes several steps. I pasted the bottom ends of the tubes closed. It felt like punishment but it probably wasn’t, maybe just old-fashioned ...

I got up at 7:30, joined the others inside and ate a banana and bread with butter while reading the New York Times news story about Congress passing Obama’s health care package. We went out to work in the garden at 8:00 and I mentioned to Ignacio how quiet it is in the house and he said he’s the only one who talks much. I spent the morning with my hands in the soil. The soil is sandy but I can tell they have built it up over the years as well. I weeded and tilled one ...
