    Plovdiv is a cool town! It has been designated as one of two European Capitals of Culture for 2019. Today we walked around old town with our group: went into the Ethnographic Museum, another Orthodox Church, and an example of a house of a rich merchant. Of course there are Roman ruins here!     ... a few years. It once had over 300 monks...today it has only 8! Also during the communist period, many precious silver and gold items were taken to Russia.... never to be seen again. (The Russians have refused to return anything.) We took in an Orthodox service that evening. I got up early and watched the monk complete the call to prayer and watched part of the service.     So much brain work necessitated a beer and salad, so stopped for lunch. Jerry joined us for a while and then set off on his own again. We went to an old Bulgarian house Ned...???, another museum and another coffee. Exhausting, but now feel we have 'done' Plovdiv.

    I'm typing this sitting in the wonderfully atmospheric common room at Hostel Old Plovdiv. The wooden ceiling is very high and has intricately carved leaves in the middle; this is a historic house, built in 1868 for a rich, local tobacco merchant.
