Long drive to Plovdiv today-4.5 hours. Stopped at Rila Monastery founded in 927. By the fourteenth century it was a very strong feudal power. Today, only ten monks. ... Ottomans wouldn't allow public buildings (oddly?) so the houses often were overly large and had very large reception rooms which could be used for meetings. Interestingly many were also inter-connected so the women could move between the houses unseen.

Now back in the hotel the skies have cleared a bit and the mountains we will drive through to Greece tomorrow can be seen in the distance.

We are getting later and slower in the mornings. Sitting drinking our second cup of coffee in the lovely garden of the Arbanasi Han Hotel (which I can highly recommend) watching a very dark red, almost black, squirrel playing in the trees it was hard to set off for Plovdiv. A chance conversation alerted us to the newly discovered Thracian tombs of 4C BC in the valley of Kazanlak which were only explored in 2004. ...

... walks and roof. It is still used as a mosque so there were lots of people praying. We also had to cover from hear to toe so they gave us some interesting outfits to put on.
