Great trip down Route 93 to Ely. Passed the "Loneliest Road in America", Route 50, but this has got to be a competitor. Except for spectacular geography, not much along this route, unless you have an ATV that can take you up the dirt roads into the foothills where there seems to be a lot of mines, most of them abandoned.
Ely is another 'left over" town, from the boon days of mining. All these towns have a dog-eared look to ...
... that it has been tough for me not to venture off my highway and into one of the old abandoned cave mines. You know. Just to see... or maybe just for a good journal story. I won't though. I made someone make me make a promise not to.
Tonight, I chose to post lots of pictures. They are some of my favorites and hopefully show through my simple eye the grand and awesome beauty of this forgotten region. I hope you enjoy.
... 8 billion acres of sage brush and open prairie. Big cattle country, and two Indian reservations. Reminds us of stretches of the Baja Penninsula highway, where there's no gas stations for hundreds of miles, literally. Anyway, really enjoying the easy drive on the back roads, with no traffic, straight as a Mormon missionary, fascinating humungous ranches in the foothills, mining roads up to seemingly nowhere, etc.
Tomorrow will be even more remote.

... out in Aussie surf brands for 80% less then you would pay in Australia. Mark got some great deals on T shirts, jeans and shorts. We'll have to buy another suitcase to get it home. I won't have to buy the kids any clothes for a year.
