... everyone down and instead patiently await my turn. There are several steps to getting on an elephant without a platform. Step 1) "jalong" (head down) firmly grasp your elephants head and step on her trunk. She will lift you and then you climb up her face onto her neck. Step 2) turn around without falling off. Step 3) catch the bananas the Mahout throws to you and feed them to your elephant so she doesn't want to hurt you. Step 4) "pai, pai" (forward) don't fall off your elephant ...

Hello, Villagers!

A travel blog entry by ripo0005 on Jun 08, 2014

... is literally nothing for us to do out here. Once it gets dark, the day is over. On a side note, I asked my Professor why we went to this particular village. He explained that the temple with the school that we had visited earlier in the week has some sort of outreach program with this village. It was one of the monks ideas to take us there. In a way, it was like a missions trip. Apparently, we were the first group to ever go to that village and stay in the ...

Treatment Center (Thanyarak)

A travel blog entry by ripo0005 on Jun 05, 2014

... disorders. Keep in mind that Thailand does not use the DSM, so some of their classifications for the disorders may be slightly different than what we know in Ameica. The psychiatrist mentioned that co-occurring disorders that come along with the addiction are what he finds hardest to deal with. Many individuals in Thailand are not well educated about these disorders, and unlike the United States, mental health is still stigmatized.

... are just so huge and smart and gentle! My elephants name was pronounced baan-jou. I have no idea how to spell it in Thai so I won't try :) she was 3.5 tons of love! We learned how to lay the elephant down, turn, start and stop and make it get up the first day. We ride through the forest with a group of about 10 and stopped for a great lunch and mud bath before riding again to the river where we cleaned up. It was probably about 5 hours total of ...

Busy, busy, busy

A travel blog entry by kthompson213 on Jan 13, 2014

Well if you can't gather from the title, these past 4 days have been super busy for me. Barely even had time to rest except for sleep, but that's a good thing. On Friday, I had orientation to Nakornping Hospital. It was very different to the health care system I am used to in America. Here there are about 40 patients together in one big room on each ward. Depending on the ward, normally the ration of nurse to patient ...

Lovely little place on Rat Vitti (i think that's how you spell it). The staff leave you well alone which is great, the setting is lovely and it's near loads of good stuff so all good in that respect. THe rooms are a little spartan but hey, I didn't come to Thailand to spend all day in my room.
