RATS! RATS! RATS!

... of her clansmen's sons died while drinking from well, Karni Mata asked Yama, the god of death, to bring him back. Yama told her that she was told was too late, the boy had already been reincarnated. Karni Mata (who had preformed miracles in the past and was already known as a mystic) struck up a deal with Yama. She asked that if the boy and all future desendants of her clansmen from then on, could be reincarnated as rats. Yama agreed, and ...

The Rat Temple and Road Kill

... filming...(Ben here, I never agreed to any facial hair contest because I know I can't grow hair but Dave loves himself so I will continue to let him sing his own praises)

Next morning, we hired the world slowest auto rickshaw(like a tuk-tuk with a lawnmower engine) to drives us 35 km into the desert to the rat temple. What the hell it was cheap right, and we were stoked to see another must see sight. Our ...

Camel Safari

... two camel drivers, senior and junior, and guide were all multi talented and pitched in and cooked, collected brush for the fire, washed up, set up camp etc. The Thar desert is mainly desert scrub and brush and not much in terms of sand dunes, except for when we made camp both nights. The region is dotted with many small villages which we rode through and the kids would come out and wave to us. We were obviously the main attraction ...

India Part 10: Bikaner

... air conditioning unit was going to be fixed for us and we would be able to return to our room in half an hour. Excellent! 2 hours and several beers later and our room was still teeming with sweaty Indians trying to fix the air con. The pair of us were showered in sweat as the air con in the bar was as effective as us blowing on our own arms to cool down. Dinner was revolting yet, amazingly, only our first disastorous meal since we've been in India. My food was ok ...

The Rat Temple

... They scurry across the floor, run in and out of holes in the walls, and hang around drinking out of huge saucers of milk. It is considered good luck if one of the rats runs over your feet. Thousands of pilgrims come here, buying sugary Indian sweets from the shops outside as Prasad, an offering to the rats of the temple. Hunched old women in colourful saris leave their sweets on the shrine for the rats to eat, while bringing her hands together in a ...

Deshnok you dirty rat!

... as rats. As with all temples you leave your shoes by the door. So we walked barefoot over old food nad droppings on the temple floor, where the rats gather to drink milk from dishes or eat the blessed food. I'm glad that it's considered a great privlige to have one run over your feed as quite a few of the scabby souls scampered over whenever I stopped to take a photos.

Temples, Pickpockets, and Tapestries

... Dinner ----- Dinner was at another palace. I forget the name but it was a British designed palace. Basically it was designed by a British architect and built with Indian laborers. The architecture is a mix of Western Europe and Indian. While it was impressive to look at, it was also quite cold and museum like. It felt a lot like a boring museum or a bank vault. Regardless the food was great as it was nice to get some continental food for a change.
