Speelunking for Christ

Spent the morning holding a candle in the dark peeping at mummified monks. But more on that later. Dinner last night was the best so far. The place is called "The War and The Peace" and offers Russian and Ukrainian fare. Located in a little hole in the wall on Andriyivsky, it's lined with "windows" framing black and white photos of the city in the 19th century. A guy was playing "Ä Man and a Woman" and "Strangers in the Night" on an upright piano at the end of the room while I supped on potat...

Kiev Day 2

... Lauren was eventually able to find Helen and she helped her find some pierogi type dumplings and I just pointed at some things to the server that were like a cabbage roll and some chicken - which also turned out to be very good. We then headed back to the apartment for a bit. For dinner we decided to tone it down and went to the local McDonalds...

Until tomorrow,
Scott & Lauren

I bought a few groceries while they were eating. We ended the day people watching on a bench along Khreschatyk Street. On the weekends they close the street for pedestrian traffic only. Most of the females wear skimpy clothes and high heels in the Summer. Actually, they wear high heels all the time.

First Day in Ukraine: the adventure of adventures

... female wore high, high heels. The women were beautiful, but dressed like street workers. A theme that would continue throughout my entire time in Ukraine.

Our evening consisted of supper at the Howell apartment followed by a very "brisk" taxi ride to the train station for our overnight train to Lviv. The train station in Kyiv is beautiful. It looks baroque and very western. I was rather scared at the crowded station as we had been repeatedly warned ...

The New Year

... a few church holidays. St. John the Baptist is a big one. Many people do the polar bear dip in the Dnipro River to commemorate St. John baptizing Jesus. There are also tons of people at all the churches getting 2 liters bottles filled with water blessed and then taking it home to bless the house and people. The rivers were filled with people and the churches were packed. The monks would spray all the people with holy water as they came. Interesting.<br ...

The General Lee

... trips, evened us out. That night we had fireworks for their Independence Day Celebration. Later when we got back to our rooms my bed was turned down and there was the daily liter of bottled water out. So, in reference to the General Lee - our boat was named after General Lavrinenkov, however, we can't quite manage to figure out how to say his last name so I have dubbed her the General Lee ( I hope Bo and Luke won't mind, she is a worthy vessel).

... Monday to be an English teacher!! The Embassy is working on getting me a passport and the school will work on the VISA end of things. Olga, the founder and lady I work for picked me up at the Peace Corps office and got me settled into an apartment - it even has a washing machine and hot water! There are two other "teachers" arriving within the week. I am anxiously awaiting my new English Teacher roommates and life in Kiev. After two weeks of training ...

We did a walking tour today down and area called St. Andrew's decent. There is a beautiful church there called - what else- St. Andrew's Church. The area is named after the first Christian preacher in the area. We visited numerous vendors selling their goods and visited around 4 ...
