Arrived Tallinn, Estonia for a few day's exploring. Stayed at the Radisson Hotel - very modern and good facilities. Tallinn is a very interesting place to visit - quite unspoiled medieval trappings. Worth the visit.
Tallinn, Estonia clgsAs Graham hadn't seen the Old Town in Tallinn yet, we decided to spend the morning taking a wander around. We first headed up to the raised Parliament area with that naff expensive toilet and around the various panoramic photo areas. From here we meandered down the length of Pikk St which runs all the way across the Old Town along to the Estonian Maritime Museum held in the "Fat Margaret" tower in the city walls. The museum covers 4 floors and is filled with a number of exhibits relating to t...

... to go inside I did wander around the grounds and take a few photos.
The second stop was the museum ships of the Estonian State Maritime Museum. I toured and icebreaker, coastguard patrol boat and the submarine Lembit, which was a mine-laying submarine built for the first Republic of Estonia by Vickers in Barrow-in-Furness and delivered in 1936. It was very interesting to see a the WWII era sub.

Tallinn, Harjumaa, Estonia leedu... tortured or drafted into Soviet troops just to die in the world wars. The Soviets wanted to Russianize Estonia by putting a loarge number of Russian citizens here, as a result the percentage of the ethnic Estonian population drops. In 1991 at the time of the collapse of Soviet Union, Estonia declared independence, the Estonian citizen sang patriotic songs, formed a human line from Tallinn all the way to Vilnius with millions of people. They were ...
Tallinn, North-West Russia, Estonia andrewyI became more Finnish over the past week or so as Katri and I are house-sitting for her grandparents in the center of Helsinki. First, my coffee intake is way up. Finnish people drink about a million tons of coffee per person per year, and it's starting to rub off on me. It's a pleasant thing, a central part of welcoming someone into your home, eating, or waking up. Everyone has strong opinions on how to prepare coffee ...

Tallinn, Estonia bitenagoolyMy cold has turned into a minor chest infection and I'm feeling a bit weak so I'm not too motivated to go anywhere even though Mai had gotten me bus times to places outside Tallinn to go to today last night. I just hung round in the warm house and checked e-mails and started this travelouge. I have a feeling lots of days are going to be shorter than these entries! I finally left the house at 5:20 ...
Tallinn, Estonia wadeoliver... and dump thousands of tourists on Tallinn every morning. Fortunately for me, they are mostly gone by mid-afternoon, so I could wander in peace. And wander is exactly what I did, through the alleyways, through the churchyards, under the fortress arches and into the beautiful churches. Like Riga, music seemed to be everywhere. It amazed me that these 12th century buildings stood strong through so much history. I did not visit Estonia's ...
Tallinn, Estonia charmedlife... you as tourists. Finding a nice and not too expensive restaurant is also a challenge. You have to take a look at where the locals go. That is normally not in the old town, though there are some nice places as well, but rather expensive. Well, I bought some yarn today. Almost one kilo. It is so much cheaper here! 35 euros for wool which is Estonian and hand-coloured. Would cost around 100 euros n Finland or Germany. I'm soon going to start a new pullover for Basty :D ...
