It was a bizarre introduction to Russia, and a consistent theme of our short glimpse of this wonderful yet intriguing country. The Russian officials were truly fearsome yet the local people were surprisingly open, extremely friendly and easy going - and great company.

The drawback of organising a trip independently is that you have to sort out your own problems.

I'm about to find out how good I am at it.

I checked with reception. The lady was really nice but I couldn't understand her at all.

Problem #1 solved...WiFi, an IPad and Google Translate.

The hotel has a policy of not accepting anything for it's guests.

The day started far too early. We had set the alarm for 4:15am so we could present ourselves in the Marina Lounge at 5:30.

Our butler, Rony, impeccably dressed as usual, appeared punctually at 5:02, bearing the breakfast we had ordered last night. We wolfed it down, since we'd been warned that we wouldn't be getting much to eat until dinner, except for a boxed meal on the train.
