Historical Traveler Reviews of Radisson Hotel Memphis Airport

Worst Radisson in the USA!

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed here on the final night of our vacation. Being stupid, I didn't read the Tripadvisor reviews, I just looked at the dollar signs--the Hampton Inn was charging $175 and the Radisson was charging $74.

According to the staff, this place is now under new management, and certainly they were busy painting, trimming, and updating. However, I was sorely disappointed by the lack of a swimming pool--it is being renovated--the absence of a bar--they are getting their liquor license and can ony sell beer. But they were quite accomodating at the front desk, the retired gent who drives the van is a gem and very funny, and the restaurant staff was polite and prompt. But we, too, found dirty plates in the hall, vending machines that didn't work, and of course a lot of noise (not the hotel's fault) from the FedEx planes.

Would we go there again? No, but I really think they are trying to spruce the place up, and the staff was polite and helpful.

Being a frequent business traveller and a former traveling construction worker, I have stayed in every roach motel from Milwaukee to Tampa, but have never had an experience quite like the one I had at The Radisson, Memphis Airport.

I made these reservations online and was travelling with the president of my company ( Boy, did I make a great impression!). On the previous night, we stayed at A Radisson in Downtown St. Louis that was fabulous.

We checked in and immediately headed out to soak up some of the local food and fun without checking the rooms. We returned at about 10:00 PM on January 26th. The person behind the counter couldn't seem to muster the energy to greet us. I guess the hyjinx going on in the back room was more important. On my way to the room, I noticed a room service tray full of half eaten food that appeared to be taking on a second life. Upon entering the room, I noticed that both desk lamps were burned out. The HVAC unit rattled and was loud, even on the low settings. As I left to find a vending machine for a beverage, I noticed the tray of food still sitting in the hall. The vending machine was completely sold out of it's all caffienated beverages. The OTHER machine, at the other end of the hotel had only grape soda (yuk) available. When I went to turn in for the night, around 1:00AM, I was shocked to find that the bed had no padding beneath the sheet, just a lumpy, rock hard mattress. Almost simultaneously, Fed Ex began the first in a series of night maneuvers which, from what I could discern, included a taxi in the parking lot outside my window. After snatching a couple hours of sleep ( Maybe ), we prepared to leave in the lobby. On the way, I was again greeted by the tray of food. For coffee, I was told that I had to go to the restaurant at the back of the hotel, where it took about 15 minutes to get the coffee ( In non-travel friendly cups/lids) and another 5 to get cream. Normally, a check-out would include the question "How was your stay?".....I noticed that the staff dared not, or cared not.

I've learned my lesson. Any hotel with "Airport" in it's title will be a no-go, but shame on Radisson for allowing this location to deteriorate in every possible service and charge me $90 for the displeasure. I would rather sleep on a park bench.

I should have read the other reviews

We had an unplanned trip to the Memphis airport on January 21, 2005. We were tring to get out of Detroit before a snowstorm the next day and to San Juan for a cruise two days later. We had no luggage as that was on a plane to Newark for a connection to San Juan that we could not make because of mechanical problems. My wife and I arrrived in Memphis exhausted and she would not explore any off airport locations. If only I had read the other reviews. This hotel is old and dingy and the Fed-x planes do take off all night right over the hotel throughout the night.

Won't stay there again

I chose to stay there because of the Park & Fly option, but I will never stay there again! The entrance looked nice enough, but the hallway to the ground level room was in awful shape---the hallway carpet appeared to have been damaged by water and had an overall dingy appearance. The tub drained so slowly that I was standing in ankle deep water while showering. There were no hand towels and no face cloths. Fed Ex jets took off from midnight til one a.m. and from four til five a.m., one right after the other, right outside the room. There was absolutely no way to get any sleep. Noise aside, the mattress was horrible. I left my car in their parking lot, and their shuttle van took me to the airport for a weekend trip. Upon return, I had to call the hotel three times asking for a shuttle ride back to get my car. I waited 20 minutes for the shuttle and the hotel is only three minutes from the terminal, actually on airport grounds!

Tried to find a new hotel within 30 min!

Elvis Week 2004!

Me and my sister drove from PA to TN and dear God the 20 hr drive each way was better than the 4 nights at this hotel! The trip was only 2 months ago and thanks to my vacation video I can explain things in full detail. 2 days before the trip I called to confirm and needless to say I wrote down the guys name being I didnt know if things would change from 1 day to the next. I called AGAIN the next day (day before departure) and they had nothing settled. They offered to upgrade me to *a better room* which i said to do. When we where at check-in there was a few couples complaining about their room so that shouldve been my first hint never to get settled in. They didnt have any of the requests made NOR the room I requested!!!

After dealing with me with 30 min my patience ran dry and out came *the angry yankee* haha. I didnt raise my voice but explained that if they drove for 20 hrs how would they feel...now this is just at checkin! Thank God i went with my sister because all they had left were king sized rooms. The ticket agency either expedia/cheaptickets explained they had comp. breakfast for every day of your stay. Not so apparently. They explained if they saw the listing then they would do what they could. Apparently their *business room* was down so how exactly could i do that with no online accessablitly? Being I am on my computer 24-7 email was DEF a need!

We finally get to our (1st room) on the 3rd floor...and needless to say it was filthy. There was polish (hopefully) on the tables you could write your name in it. The desk was falling apart and the chair litterally came apart! The recliner was blocking the one end table drawer from coming out, and there was no bible! The bathroom was HORRIBLE, not enough towels and they're was mounds of dirt under the shower mat. This by far was the funniest thing to see as my friends cringed while watching our video. Our room had a LOVELY view of the AIRPLANES taking off all day and nite. That surprisingly was the saddest thing to see as we left....because now we've grown so used to heavy machinery shaking our room, how could we sleep in silence ever again like normal human beings :) haha if you ever feel like going for a night run just go across the small parking lot in the back, go 10 steps and ur on the runway haha, dont forget to jump the small wire fence you'll be doing yourself a favor by getting smacked by a plane!:)

If you do go to this hotel, they moved us to the 2nd floor to the end room right in the back...basically right under our last room. The 2nd floor is code word for ground level. so just walk around back and its right when u turn the corner. still no web access, room was ALOT nicer (for a crappy hotel) than the first room but still had same complaints about bathroom. Just take no baths! Inbetween switching rooms it took at least 5 hours and they didnt want us to leave our room. So therefore we missed 3/4 a day which almost cost us in the long run. Thank God our friends flew in so we didnt have to stay there a week in a horrible mood.

The staff with the exception of a few nice cleaning people and the resturant manager was horrible. I went to Memphis for a few nites in Oct 03 for Lisa Presleys tunica show and needless to say the Holiday Inn Select I think it was which isnt that far away is MUCH better than this. No airplane noises, a nicer room, and def better staff. If they where not booked up we wouldve switched there. So please take this into HEAVY consideration...otherwise hope your happy wasting your trip just trying to find a decent room cause you wont.

**also no fridge, pool was in horrible location and there was cars PARKED ON THE TENNIS COURT!! I wouldnt stay here even for free!*

Pretty Poor...

Thought this would be a pretty safe bet as a Raddison, but was very wrong. This hotel is very old, very dirty and VERY, VERY noisy. Stay anywhere but here...

Yuk!!!!!

the worst!!! dirty, dingy, just bad. water leaked from our ceiling in the middle of the night, when we called the desk, the man on thephone asked if we could just take the mattress off and sleep on the floor.

the restaurant, was also the worst. we ate with the fire alarm going off for 1 hour boy did we all have a ear-ache.. airplanes kept us up all night, didn,t expect the rooms to be on the outside. 10/10 to 10/12 2003

The hotel was pretty crappy. We had bugs, live and dead all over our room. The pool was not up, the staff are rude and the atm didn't work. The runway of the airport was in our room as well. If you staythere, brace yourselves, I can't believe that this hotel stays in business. The Raddison co. needs to close it down, the hotel is ruining their rep.

Hated It!

Raggedy!! At check-in, we were assigned a room on the lower level (room doors open to the outside instead of into a hallway). There was mold and cobwebs on one wall and space under the door for whatever to crawl in. We went back to the front desk and requested another room. Luckily, the manager had another room that was located inside the hotel and we were able to move to that room. A refrigerator was among the amenities listed on their website but when I inquired at the front desk, I was told that none of the rooms had refrigerators. The covering of the elevator walls had been removed as part of the hotel's remodeling efforts. They appeared to have been this way for some time. Overall, this is just a tacky hotel! Would not recommend.

Tired you will be

The runway was attached to our bedroom, all night the room shook and vibrated with every plane that took off and landed.
