Concha y Toro Winery

Chile has excellent wine growing conditions as it is sheltered with the Andean mountains in the east and the Pacific coast on the west. This means that although there is intense heat in the middle of the day, there is also a cool breeze in the mornings and evenings to allow the grapes to rest. The soil is volcanic providing nutrients and there is a reliable water supply from the glaciers in the mountains. Chile is one of the top ten wine producing countries and the winery 'Concha y Toro' is t...

The protest capital of the world!

... Americans have no problem with PDA (public displays of affection). There are couples of all ages making out everywhere! We ran across quite a few in this park (not sure if its other name is "make-out park", but it should be!

We also visited a great coffee shop, the kind that I think might only be found in Santiago... "coffee with legs". It is a regular coffee shop except there are only women who serve you in short, skin-tight outfits and it is standing room only. It ...

Genteel Chileans

... On several occasions, people have come up to us to warn us on putting our cameras away for fear of it being swiped. I can't get over how nice Chileans are- a sales woman in a wine store not gave us advice and a detailed route of all the major wineries in Southern Chile but she also gave us her personal cell number in case we needed her advice while we were there. She said she studied on scholarship to the ...

Adios to South America

... country – 10 or 12 hour bus journeys are unheard of at home and yet they are the norm in Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia and Peru! We have also found that 5 months is no where near enough to see the continent – a week in Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Colombia was no where near enough but it did allow us at least to get the smallest flavour of a place. The longest we spent in a country was 6 weeks in Argentina – even this ...

Santiago

With such a limited time in Santiago it isn't really fair to make a judgement on the city, but if first impressions count then I found it to be unremarkable, the great mountains that can be seen as the backdrop standing over the city are impressive, but the smog or mist so obscures them that they are merely a presence that gives a foreboding feeling and highlights the flat blandness of the ...

Santiago - not a dump!

... somewhere before reaching the surrounding mountains. In the end I was sad to be leaving Santiago (and its beautiful chicas) so soon, but the lads had already spent two days there previously (though they weren't so enamoured with it on that occassion) and we've already spent far too long dawdling around the southern/expensive half of South America, so onwards and upwards to La Serena!

... into the corridor, but not to the outside. This seems to keep the room quite cool. On checking I found out its 19% cheaper paying by USD because you don't have to pay tax. There's a tourism office here and they advised me that I don't need to book a bus to Valparaiso for tomorrow, I just need to take the Metro to a station on the outskirts of town.
