... the main part of the city we went to Shiroishi Castle, which like other things, has been rebuilt. It actually was damaged in the 2011 earthquake and was closed for repairs but reopened in the fall of last year. Castle is somewhat misleading, since only the walls and a large tower were rebuilt. A true highlight of our japanese experience is Zao Onsen, a ski resort town about 45 minutes East of Yamagata.
We came here a bit by chance and were very lucky indeed. This town is so charming, lots of little lodges and restaurants, it's pretty, clean and surrounded by mountains, ski slopes and lakes. ... the way so the trains weren't working anymore, we had to wait for a bus and then the bus left us at another train station and finally we got where we needed to be. Total time by local train: 13hours.
Collapsed once i arrived in the hotel that had a shower, which i hadn't had for two days (lol) and passed out.
