Suburbs of Madrid

After picking up travel food from nearby restaurants, we metro'd over to the train station for our final train ride back to Madrid. While we were there at a cafe getting some breakfast, the guy in front of me bought two draft beers and a danish, the Spanish breakfast of champions. Beer seems to be considered a regular soft drink here in Spain. Any time a soft drink is a menu option, a can of beer is considered an equivalent option. Even in the McDonald's it is. When we were looking to get to...

Prado and Flamenco Show

Today is free day at the Museo del Prado so of course today is the day we went. Art museums are always a bit awkward for me. I have no formal training in art appreciation, so I just look at each picture for a few seconds and get the feeling of it and move on. I see the old paintings more as a window into a time before photography more than as of a work of art. It works for me but makes for poor conversation when people ask me "how did you like (insert name here)'s works?". I enjoyed it, but ...

Toledo, not in Ohio

After a lazy start, we took the hour-long bus over to Toledo, southwest of Madrid. The city center is a densely packed bunch of streets atop a high hill overlooking the whole region. For our day there, Toledo could be called the city under renovation, because just about every major thing to see was closed for major repair. The one highlight was that the Museo de Santa Cruz was open (on Monday) and free until the end of June. The museum had a ton of old stones from the Roman era with Latin ca...

¡Hola! para Madrid

... and other surrialist and cubist artists. After that museum we decided to go to the Arcitecture museum, mostly becasue it was close and free but it turned out to be pretty interesting. We saw lots of little models of perspective buildings.

That night we went to go see a Flamenco performance. We signed up with our hostel and went as a group. This was definately not a flashy¨"touristy" performance, there was one ...

Ah the spanish, and the lack thereof!

... to say no! We aren't having sugar drinks at servo stops or dinner, and snacks are museli bars not ice cream or chips. I don't think the europeans do a lot of "diet" products..so tonight I am going to try and leave half of what is served....will let you know how that went!
After breakfast we all hopped on board the bus at 8am, and got ready for a long drive to Madrid. We were going via Burgos, a lovely little town than has a really nice Church. It was an hour before we hit really ...

Giddy like a schoolgirl

... excited to be returning to Spain again - I actually had goosebumps! The nicest thing about flying to Spain is the beautiful Spanish flight attendants. As I boarded the plane, a flight attendant smiled at me and said "Hola". "Wow ..." I thought to myself. The I looked to her immediate right, where another flight attendant also said "Hola". "Wow ... " I thought to myself, "... she's even cuter than the first one. I could die a happy man ...

So the last few days have been great. Although i for sure have lung cancer from the mass smoking here i have managed to buy 10 new pairs of shoes which all fit in my backpack=woooo hoo==, became a Madrid soccer fan and learned how to eat tapas and drink sangria like a local. Madrid has been really fun and I have met some great friends along the way. The huge ...

this place is surreal.

well madrid, the place everyone told us not to bother with. it was just a big city, not much to see, might as well just stay in barcelona they said. well i suppose ´they´were half right. we took a wonderful spanish train (wonderful minus the stinky guy sitting next to colleen, and the lack of leg space) that had tvs and everything. im telling you our trip on this train in second class was nicer than viarail first class x1000. we got ...

I can see the headlines. Furious Dane goes...

... you say???..., man you suck. How long have you lived here in Madrid? More than two months and you still haven't been to a game??? Man, that's really sad. I haven't had a decent break from work in a while, but now I had the opportunity. So when I got a ticket to the game there was no questions about it. I had to go. Money was no object". He goes on and on, and it actually sounds like it means the world to him. "So when is the game?" "Tomorrow ...

Madrid Again

So, we went back to Madrid for a few days before heading to South Africa. We did a city tour with Vision Madrid, a hop on hop off type of thing, and just hung out at the hostel. We were supposed to get on a plane around midnight on the 20th but we got bumped off, along with a sweet girl we met from Portugal & South Africa who was on her way to Joburg to celebrate her 18th birthday with her dad. At first we were ******, but then found out they ...
