Finally Fatima
Well, not quite what I expected. A huge piazza, bigger than St Peters in Rome with modern buildings. A huge cathedral - super modern, Lisa said it could hold 10,000 people, not sure where she got that figure from but it certainly felt like it. We bought a 60cm beeswax candle and lit it. Then proceeded to the spot where Mary was said to have appeared before the three children. We saw two separate women circumnavigating the spot in their knees whilst a mass was said for ...
Sintra - Unesco World Heritage centre
We caught a train to Sintra, which is 28km northwest of Lisbon. The tourist blurb is all true:
Sintra has a pinch-me quality with its rippling mountains, dewy forests thick with ferns, and fairy-tale palaces affording top-of-the-beanstalk views. It is a storybook of pastel-daubed villas folded into luxuriant hills that roll down to the blue Atlantic.

Apparently Sintra was originally a largely barren hill that ...
Country Stay
On Wednsday headed out to the country for a day. It almost felt like home, away from the big city. I not sure that I like to stay in the big city for an extended period of time. To much noise, to much dust. Its nice for a short period though. Went to the river which I was glad was not as cold as the beach. Had a relaxing evening re-reading Jane Eyre. Thursday morning we went to the Convent of the Order of Christ. I groaned when I heard we were going to another ...
Piri Pir chicken!
Our first main stop was Lagos. Lagos is a coastal town along the Algarve coastline and close to what was known as known as 'the end of the world.' Back in the 1400's the Europeans believed there was nothing beyond the blue Atlantic waters. It is strangely similar to the Australian coastal towns, and quite laid back also. Being a Nando's fan, I was on the hunt for some Piripiri chicken, which was actually hard to find- But, ...
