We arrived at Brindisi at around 8.30 after a bit if a hot night on the boat. The ferry was OK but the AC in the cabin was poor, though a man said it could have been changed; maybe.... The cabin itself was good and the crossing smooth but it was bit a short hot night. Getting off the boat was also slow, not helped but unbelievably stupid lot who managed to have an accident on the boat deck due to impatience.... ...

... smaller towns are not as touristy.

They hate the Turks in Lecce. This is because of a war and dominance by the Turks over the people of Lecce. The symbol/emblem of Lecce is a dolphin with a half moon in its mouth. The half moon represents Turkey - the dolphin (representing the people of Lecce) is eating the Turks.

The guide who took us for a walk around the old town shed a new light for me on baroque architecture:

... of Austria there was snow on the mountains.
There’s been a really cold spell here and we’re bundling up against the chill winds. The surrounding mountains are all getting more snow on the top, and the air is clean and fresh. Life would be beautiful to stay here in summer and Italy in winter, but I don’t know if that will be possible for me since it’s really difficult to get the right permits.

... prominotory had a violent past, which was delicately referred to as "The Tragedy of 1480". It turned out that the Turks, after keeping the city under seige for 15 days, gained entry, then took the surviving townsfolk out and beheaded them! The tragedy was referred to at various locations around the town when explaining why this or that had happened, but we only found one reference which actually stated what had happened. ...

From a distance, either north or south, Gallipoli was a strikingly white town out in the blue of the Mediterranean. Absolutely spectacular.

TT struggled with taking us to the information centre. Miles out. It also wasn't where the town map indicated, LP, and, in fact, was hidden away down a narrow street in the middle of the town. It was indicated accurately in the tourist brochure that ...
