Quest Ballarat Colony

Wednesday 20 August 2009<br><br>Today has been a good day. Spent a full day at Sovereign Hill, a living history museum of a gold mining town in the 1850s when gold was discovered in Ballarat. Brilliant day as there was loads to do and the people working there were really interesting and knowledgeable. ... ca. 2km² nachgebaut im Stile der damaligen Zeit. Sogar all die Menschen, die dort arbeiten, sind in dem Stil eingekleidet und gehen dort ihren täglichen Tätigkeiten nach. Man kann dort einen ganzen Tag verbringen und verschiedenen Aktivitäten oder Touren mitmachen oder Demonstrationen ansehen. Today, I stayed in Brunswick. Went for a walk around the neighborhood. It's amazing the stuff you can grow here. There are olive trees, citrus fruit, I believe the neighbor is growing persimmon, but I'm not sure, I saw a banana plant, but I am not sure it grows bananas (I don't think so). ... my brother leigh took me for a ride with niece Lara on a double buscuit towed behind the boat, I couldn't stop laughing. New Years day was our annual family cricket match with about only 40 relatives making it this year and it was a good day had by all. We arrived at Ballarat today and stayed at a camp site that was approx 500m from Sovereign Hill, a 1800's Goldmine Town. Sovereign Hill is a purpose built 'themed town' to show you what the goldmines town used to look like... they even have a river in the town where you can pan for gold (that is put in the river each morning - only specks, but you catch my drift!). ... the night before, this time in the hope we would see some original aboriginal rock art. The art is very difficult to date, but it is believed to be around 20,000 years old. The aborigines are one of the first cultures to express themselves using art. Our first visit would be Ngamadjidi Shelter (the art was produced in rocky shelters).
