I'm settling in here at Xiamen University. I'm slowly becoming accustomed to the busy streets, masses of people, packed buses, new foods, different customs, higher buildings, shorter tables, hotter days, foreign language and bolder life. ... in front of it. The tour guides were quick to tell us that Mao had visited the place once but without any real enthusiasm. There were a number of classrooms which are distinguished only by a small platform at the front where the teacher would sit in front of their students. Built right next door was a Confucius school of learning and we got lucky enough to see a group of primary school children reciting poetry on ...

... The only decent moment of perplexity I had this week was when I witness the propane delivery guy texting while driving. It was perplexing because he delivers 30gallon tanks of propane using a motorcycle. He can fit about 6 tanks on the sides and back of his bike. So he was texting, while driving a motorcycle, with flammable gas hanging on the sides, and he was smoking a lit cigarette. There are days when I am convinced that I am in some form of redneck ...
