    ... one of the largest parks in India.

    Mar 1- Before breakfast we join a local guide for a 2-3 hour nature walk in the sanctuary. In the afternoon we take a boat ride to see the animals up close. We may see elephant, otter, wild pig and buffalo. Birds are abundant often seen are kingfishers, storks and hornbills.

    Mar 2- Leaving the hills we descend to the coastal plans through tea plantations and fruit orchards to board our houseboat ...

    ... these flatlands are not actually flat and do slope up somewhat as you move west, although this fact is not immediately obvious. We began to notice that the town signs stopped showing population (eg. “Welcome to Leeds – Pop 937”) and started showing altitude (eg. “Brush – Elev 4015”).     Today we visited the Wild Animal Sanctuary - a non-profit organization that rescues and provides a permanent home for wild animals that have been abused, abandoned, displaced or neglected. Currently they have over 290 animals (tigers, lions, wolves, bears and a variety of other smaller carnivores)! It was a really neat experience, very different from visiting a zoo.
