Tabasco! Always wanted to visit here!

Ok this one is a little bit tougher to explain. Our contacts in Cordoba had contacts in Villahermoa for us - or so they said. We arrived in Villahermosa and called them to discover that they live in Cardenas, and hour behind us! When we prayed, we felt like this happened for a reason. I should've listened to my feeling. They ended up driving an hour to pick us up and an hour back. They then invited us to church under one condition ...

... things running about freely - sad all the actual relics from the site are here & not in situ, where there are some pretty poor replicas! Took a trip to Comalcalco ruins, only Mayan ruins built of brick & formerly covered with stucco, some of which had been carved or formed into figures, though very little remained. Still, pleasant setting. Went on to Paraiso which I thought was on the coast but found it with an ...

Tuxtepec. Villahermosa. Discuss.

... I had about 20 minutes to A. find the internet and retrieve their phone numbers B. call them and let them know we actually had to come much earlier than expected and C. get some mango-with-chili-and-limon. Done and done. Then of course, we waited. After all the scrambling, the bus was delayed more than an hour. La vida. The best part of all of this was our arrival in Villahermosa. We were picked up by Daniel and Lorena, who were ...

Mexican (mis)adventures

... around and climb many of these ruins, which makes for an impressive view over the jungle. They cover quite a wide area, and the main palace is absolutely huge. There was a bit of wild life around the area, but so far both Sam and I have been surprised by the relative lack of wild life (whilst it is not uncommon to see the odd lizard or bird we had expected it to be much more abundant, especially in the rural areas). Being inland Mexico the humidity factor was something ...

day 38- Campeche to Macultepec (Villa Hermosa)

WEATHER: hot (upper 90s), clear, humid. TOTAL MILEAGE: 239.3 miles All currency is in pesos. I slept in and then did my journal writing in the lobby of the hotel. We left the hotel in the morning but, due to problems getting the cell phone working (as I write this a day later, we're still off-line), we didn't leave the city until 2:30. We lunched at the Tulum cafe- I inadvertently repeated last night's dinner of ...

... area with a ready made tour. I have to admit, the tour was a bit hokey. We went by a number of Olmec (prehispanic culture) remains, all of which were replicas. I got a facial with the mud that is from the island, along with the natural mineral water, which we both tried. Apparently, they filmed some Sean Connery film here (the Medicine Man). Yet again, there was Hollywood hype. We also got to see a few crocodiles, some ...

... will be given to an orphanage, so it's for a good cause. It is raining and everything is very muddy. We all went to dinner at the palapa restaurant at the front of the park. We are camped at Los Leones Trailer park that is also a hotel. We will be here three nights. Tomorrow we go to the ruins. Hope it doesn't rain.

The guides are people from this area. They answer all the questions about maya culture like this: the maya priests was born due to relations between members of the same family ...
