The Cañon

... that had a live mexican band playing accompanied by 5 beers for just under 3 dollars. The music saydee said was a little like as they would play at a wedding although on the much lower scale of the budget. It was good fun and the beers helped with it being so loud, we got well in the swing of things and had even broken into the tequila by the time we had to leave to get the bus. This probably worked out best though to not be too distressed by all the mayhem of a friday night ...

We made it to Mexico!

... explained Mayan customs and religion and we discussed how the indigenous way of life is being threatened by missionaries who think these customs come from barbarism and ignorance. It was really an eye opening look into an ancient culture continuing to try to find a place in this modern world. We spent four days (that's long for us!) in San Cristobal, soaking in the sites, taking in a theatre production ...

The Way of the Maya

When Subcomandante Marcos and his Ejercito Zapatista de Liberacion Nacional (EZLN) set up shop in San Cristobal de las Casas on the opening day of 1994, they would have been hard pressed to find a more pleasant staging point for an indigenous uprising. A town of some quarter million people going about their business amidst brightly hued frontages and cobblestone streets in the heart of the Valle de Jovel of the Mexican Chiapas, San Cristobal is within easy access ...

... on the other side. I got lost looking fir the highway that would go around town. I actually ended of going the wrong way over a highway overpass to get turned around back in the right direction. I stated getting frustrated when we passed the commercial center where we started from.. We were going to have to go through town to access the highway on the other side. Signage in the cities are horrible or non existent as we found out when ...

Tuxtla Zoo and Canyon del Sumidero

... in Tuxtla. The boats hold 20 people and have no shade. There was one other family of people that looked like foreigners, but all of the others were definitely Mexican tourists. Definitely try to sit in the very front. When the boat is moving, you are lifted up off the water and it's probably the bumpiest spot. But, you can completely forget anyone is on the boat with you. It's so easy to drift off into your thoughts and really enjoy the scenery when no ...

... main plaza and had a incredible meal for just 45 pesos. We walked for what seemed like hours and still kept seeing new and interesting things, before we decided to spend a little time on the internet trying to catch up with some emails. Afterwards, we had a coffee and a cake from a panaderia and finally made our way to the bus station to wait for our evening bus.

... and the village elders dressed in black and white sitting down and the making a procession to some of the other men with a bottle of some liquid and doing some sort of ceremony. We wandered about the town a bit as it was a nice day noting many traditional houses made of adobe and tiled roofs. The surrounds of the town was particularly attractive as it was set in a small valley amidst many small green orderly fields with hillsides covered in jungle. We stayed for awhile ...

El Sumidero Canyon

Today I went for a tour of El Sumidero Canyon, which is about a 45 minute drive from San Cristobal, outside of Tuxtla Gutierrez. I took a tour bus with a load of Germans and Spanish couples, two of which seemed to be on their honeymoon. Bumpersticker: GERMANS DO IT ON A BOAT IN A CANYON IN MEXICO The canyon was gorgeous if you kept your head up. Look down and you see thousands of cruddy plastic bottles. The guide said this was do to throwing garbage into drains and the rain brings it ...
