Alabama's hidden gem?

... fun. After the show, we went to lunch with the crew at the wonderful hometown restaurant next door called Lunde's. They stayed open past their normal lunch hours just for us. I had a fried catfish po'boy, and was full for the rest of the day. The guys then invited us to their house this Saturday on our drive up to Decatur, AL from New Orleans. We'll see if we make it, but I bet it would be fun if we do.

Montgomery History Tour

... tour. We saw a historical movie, his study, a mural (that we weren't allowed to photograph) and the pulpit where he preached from. While it felt a bit irreverent, we were welcomed to stand at his pulpit and look out over the pews, as he once did. Wow....what a chill went up my spine when I stood there, put my hands on the sides of the podium, and looked out.

Next, we went over to the Southern Poverty Law Center and looked ...

... delicious and fun these family and friend dinners must be!!!
Andy and I just gotta come back here to experience in full the "Glen Thistle" Farm life in in all its glory!!
That night Young and Suzy took us out to one of their favorite haunts. An Italian restaurant with a relaxed family atmosphere and the greatest pizza ever. Daughter Georgia and her husband, Dustin joined us for a delicious and fun filled dinner. Georgia works as a teacher as she completes her Masters degree and ...

That set the pace for the evening as we all climbed in Young’s SUV and travel down to Marney’s a couple blocks away. George had to leave us to be with his wife, Donna for her birthday dinner. For George to squeeze in time to visit with us ...

Getting soaked in Montgomery

... More later..

Once in Montgomery I decided to take a ride through town. I'm glad I did. I visited the state capital and the church that Martin Luther King preached at. More importantly that same church was the meeting point for many of the rallies in support of the the bus boycott which was sparked by Rosa Parks. I also visited the Rosa Parks museum and the spot where the bus bench sat.

I also rode by the first white house the Jefferson ...

In the afternoon, my cousin Frankie saddled up some of the horses and Alex got to go for a little ride. Then there was more swimming and even time to hold one of Uncle D's new baby ducks...a father's day gift from his daughters.

We had a very peaceful and relaxing visit and can't wait to go back again.

Out in the Middle of Nowhere

... Oreo cookie and cream cheese balls dipped in chocolate...decadence. While Jackie was cooking, we walked down to the barn so Alex could help feed the horses. Tori & Bella were very intrigued with these new creatures and weren't quite sure how to approach them. It was a funny site.

... the street reminiscent of when the lizard jumped on his chest at dinner in Costa Rica. Locals don't seem bothered. A quick search of the area reveals no other night-time places to go so we head to the outskirts away from the infestation for drinks then sleep in the slightly seedy parking lot of Buffalo Wild Wings - lots of people eating wings. (We play trivia - despite an American history handicap, Ted is humbled once the bet is laid down).

The long journey ahead

Sadly we had to leave our friends and headed off quite early (although not as early as originally planned). The trip went very well with no real holdups along the way. However it was a very long day and we were very glad to get to our destination, get something to eat and then some sleep. Fortunately the kids were all able to have their own beds as the room rates were quite reasonable. The most interesting sight was when we turned of ...

Cranky Old Guy

... just right, fried perfectly, the crispy outer shell melting away to reveal moist fish, the breading mixing in the mouth and infusing the fish with flavor. But, honestly, best of all, the potato salad. I have never had anything like it. Homemade, the potato's the perfect size, not too much mayo, perfect consistency, and huge amounts of sweet relish. I ate every bite. By this point, when they encouraged me to have the homemade dessert I had to resist- I am trying to ...
