Onto the Island!

... of a struggling British seaside resort.

We spent all of our evenings in the company of Rowena, and on our final night in town she took us to what can only be described as a true Canadian drinking establishment. Big Bad Johns in the heart of downtown is a small basement bar that is the gathering point for a wide spectrum of colourful characters. The bar itself is like a living breathing history book of all the drunken souls that have ever passed ...

The start of my Mexican Adventure

After a couple of cups of BLACK coffee, Kathy sent me off with some sandwiches and fruit for my drive to Kelowna via the ferry from Tsawassen to the mainland. After the hour and a half ferry ride, I set out on the 5 hour drive through the Fraser Delta, the Cascade Mountains and then on to the ...

Just a short drive today(or so we thought)!!

... Sound instead of roads (like we could afford a ferry ride for this thing). We made it and it is a fairly new and small campground.

After hooking up we hopped in the car to explore the town of Sequim (pronounce Squim). I found out we missed the Lavender Festival by 1 month. They have lots of farms around here and I bet the site was beautiful. Went down to the tip of the town where you could see across the Staight of Juan de Fuca to Canada ...

Finally, We're Camping!

... across Puget Sound to the Olympic Peninsula,   we found a wonderfully clean and perfectly situated Washington State campground at Dungeness just northwest of Sequim, WA on the northern tip of the Olympic Peninsula.    It was cold when the onshore winds picked up in the evening, but daylight was long and we were more than adequately prepared so the two nights and days we spent there really refreshed us.   Nice hiking, too.

Tree-Lined Streets and Sketchy Hostels

I am writing this entry at almost the two year mark after this crazy roadtrip began, in May 2005. However the memories of this incredible experience are still vivid, and the open scrapbook on my lap brings me right back... After years of planning a road-trip around our beloved Canada, the time was finally here. On a tight budget and in a limited time frame, Aleks and I were going to do and see ...

Late Night Arrival.

After work, I hightailed it to Lindburg Airport in San Dieo and caught a late flight into Seattle. The San Diego to Seattle flight was only 2.5 hours. Relatively nice and short. I generally like flying during the night, especially on long trips. Even though I find it incredibly uncomfortable on planes, I prefer to travel during the hours of sleep. Red-eye flights are the best. You get on the plane, close your eyes, and the next thing you ...

The Olympic Peninsula, Day 1

... east, just visible, was the end of Dungeness Spit. The wind was rather fierce for a while, but then died down soon after sunset. The sun eventually disappeared behind a fog bank over Vancouver Island and it got chilly and damp. A lot like home. :) We had a good fire going, from the wood the camp manager gave us, left over from another camper who didn't use all their wood. So, we didn't have to buy any. Very nice.
