    We drove for six hours and temperature never got above minus five. Started day exploring bits of historic Wilmington. Found lovely old plantation owner mansion. Too cold for most tourists so had private tour with guide; fascinating. Kids wide eyed at slave culture. Drove then through North Carolina and Virginia. Not dissimilar to south west WA.     ... and anthem of the United States. The large stars and stripes flag flown from Fort Henry in Baltimore during British attack provided an impressive display. We did not realise how big this flag is. It is actually missing about 8 feet of the end of the flag as well as one star. These had been cut off as souvenirs during its early history. The exhibit also told the story of how the original poem, set to the music of a well known English pub song, became the US anthem.
