... as the tap beer.

Our host in Launceston, Ana, lives in an old weatherboard house with a verandah (they seem ubiquitous in Launceston, barely a brick in sight) which was set well off the street and seems to exist in a microcosm of its own. Ana's just finishing school and is brimming with enthusiasm for the activities she's involved in, especially 'Food not Bombs', which I'd never heard of before.

We chatted in her kitchen as we got to know her, then she invited ...

It's raining in Launceston!

... people expect. When we landed, we had to walk out onto the tarmac and were almost blown away by the cold wind and rain whipping around our legs. The poor chap in his t-shirt and Brisbane Lions short sleeved jersey said "This is our last time to Tassie….in winter at least." I guess they also were not impressed when the sniffer dog singled them out as they had had sandwiches in their bag, and he plonked himself down beside it and wouldn't leave until his ...

Map of Tasmania (dirty minded...yeah you!)

... It was a nice little drive and after a shower and some food we were taken on what we thought would be a little drive around Tassie. We (Randall, Matt, Donna and Eva) left about 10am and we drove over the Mathina Plains road which was a dirt track through some hills. We dodged log trucks and pot holes and got a local guided tour of all the farms and crash sites that Randall had fallen off his motor bike or car hehehe. It was really ...

Aussie: Sydney and Tassie

... good light. Today, I drove to the Bay of Fires which, according to a local brochure, is supposed to be the world's second best beach. It was nice - I again walked on flour-soft white sand and saw nice blue-green water. As an added bonus, I found a small beach which I had to myself and spent some time there reading and eating. Then I drove to Launceston (where I am now), and hopefully I can find someone at the hostel to share the ride (and the costs) for ...

... though. Stopped off at Avoca and had my photo taken with a pot cow...slowly trying to get over my phobia. Nearer to Launceston to Woolmers estate..an old estate house with national rose gardens, cottages and yes you guessed it...a tea room. Very similar to National Trust properties in the UK. Arrived at Launceston at out boutique hotel...booked over the internet to be pleasantly surprised to find our room with balcony ...

NSW game and Theme Night!

... SA vs. WA playoff (6th vs. 7th) to retain our 5th place. Last night we let off a bit of steam with Theme Night! It was a lot of fun seeing everyone's top secret themes revealed. We had Megan, Maureen, Anthony, Sarah and Geoff dressed up as jockeys, first place winners for the night were Lauren, Anna, Boo and Jacqui dressed as ...

Tassie

... follow around the island. We chose the East Coast Trail and headed out the next day. Bottom line is Tassie is beautiful. The scenary and landscape are spectacular and the beaches are amazing. As mentioned earlier it is a combination of P.E.I and Newfoundland mixed into an Australian atmosphere. Very simple people... and as one lady said as I was told I would have to wait 1 hour for a jumpstart.. "we are a small island". More on that if you ask when we ...

Nice bit of Chinese

... on a 5-day tour of Tasmania. HE was a pretty cool guy, and we just played table tennis & snooker & talked about random stuff. We were also joined by "Grape Boy", who worked from 530 this morning til 7pm in the grape vines, picking all day with only a half hour lunch break. Ok, he got $160 for his troubles, but he looks permenantly knackered. Again, he seemed nice & he's just walked in from graping, looking dead again. Max - you'll be pleased - we've got pictures of them all!! Bon nuit

... the circulation/living spaces and help 'fill' the room. The managers eyes lit up and I then had to explain it all to their maintenance guy! The lounge opens out to a courtyard garden and there is a small galley kitchen. Food is prepared off site and brought in. A disappointing scheme, when walking up the drive it looked great - modern building on a great site, nice entrance but the design hadn't been followed through to address the residents needs

Launceston

... back to the car to eat them as started raining and blowing quite heavily and was too cold and damp outside. Very changeable weather. The rain stopped as suddenly as it had begun and we were able to go on a short (10 min) walk through Derby with the sun shining. Saw the oldest timber bank blag in Tasmania (1885, I think) as well as the Derby Online Centre which also doubled as a community centre, library and medicare office. We drove ...
