As part of the Dalai Lama's Australian tour, he visited Bendigo to bless the site where they are building 'The Great Stupa'. At the moment the Great Stupa is pretty much a building site but when built (2010ish) it will be the largest buddist temple in the Southern Hemisphere (not sure how it will compare to Samye Ling). ... in an extremely modernistic style and was reasonably interesting on the history of Ballarat and the first gold finds in Victoria, though it had a slightly strange coin exhibition which didn't seem to start anywhere. By 6pm it was chucking out time so I drove through the city centre to see the real Ballarat and then back to Melbourne, stopping for Chinese foodcourt food (cheap, nice but served on a rather tiny paper plate) on the way back.
