Friday - We were on the road to Mom's by 7:30 a.m. I couldn't wait to see the farm, see my mom, drive that road from Ashland. We visited with Mom and then met friends for lunch at a place called O'Banks. The grilled shrimp wrap was refreshing with the crisp, chilled glass of c******nay. It was a short drive into the Great Commonwealth; Virginia. We picked up route 460 just outside of Roanoke, Virginia. Great kudzu-draped slopes flanked both sides of the road. I know, ...

Today was our quiet, relaxing day in and around Richmond. We started off by getting up late, missing breakfast completely. We finally left about 11am and went to the Bass Pro Shop outside of Richmond (thank ...

... an inventor, scholar, mathematician, and president. His plantation was really interesting, we went on a house tour as well as a slavery tour, and learnt a lot about life at Monticello, and the lives of the slaves. It's really an odd duality that the man that drafted the Declaration of Independence as the country bid for freedom, also kept over 600 slaves in his lifetime. Also interesting that he probably fathered a few children with one of them. On the way out of the compound, we saw ...

... extremely helpful and introduced me to an Australian family as if I'd know them or they'd know me!!!

Anyhoo ! the museum has excellent exhibits including many artefacts from Lee, Jackson, Davis, Early, a letter from the Pope, and even a Union announcement.
It also has a considerable collection of items from ordinary people like, clothes, letters, tools, everyday life and war items. Really worth visiting for an idea of the period ...
