Alpenzoo & Ski Jump

... it. It was pretty scary to think that they do the jumping in summer when they wet the slope and land on fake grass. In winter, there is at least 30 cm of hardened snow. It actually looked scarier from the bottom than the top. The stadium is also used for concerts in summer and the pope has also held a mass there.

By time we headed home, the rain had started and had set in for the night.

It's snowing outside, so it must be cold.

Woke up to Greg saying that it was snowing- what I thought was rain on the forecast had eventuated as snow- to Tara's disappointment, it wasn’t sticking so she couldn’t play in it. After breakfast in the hotel we walked across the bridge to the old city to what is the biggest attraction in Innsbruck, the Golden Roof and the Golden Roof Museum. This building was built by Frederick IV in 1420 as the residence of the Tyrolean sovereigns ...

More Snow

Walked to the train station and did an expedition to the supermarket to spend our last Swiss Francs as we are back to Euros in Austria. Had a stopover in Zurich for a while and then caught the train to Innsbruck. Again this was a scenic trip over the mountains and it started snowing and was very deep as we got higher- just beautiful scenery. Innsbruck is surrounded by mountains, all of which had snow on them.

We checked into our hotel where we ...

The ski jump from the Olympics is easily visible, even on a wet, foggy morning like today.

We could see a cathedral from the tower so once we were back down on the ground we decided to go see it up close. The weather was really nice today too so once we completed the museum and the shopping, we went to the park behind the giant's head. Here they have a hedge maze shaped like the giant's hand which looked pretty cool but we didn't venture in. Instead we soaked up a little sun before moving on to the next destination.

Ahhh...that's why all the BMWs!!!

... the best roads in the world to carve up and we were overjoyed when we saw them pull over for gas after we passed back into Austria, hoping we wouldn't see them again. Within an hour it started to rain a bit and we put on our rainsuits for the rest of the ride. As we arrived at Garmisch and made our way to the Fest we saw thousands of bikes everywhere, somewhere we read that there is usually 40,000 ...

A stop on the tour

This was a lovely little place we stopped at on the bus tour to the castles. Unfortunately, being Sunday, most everything was shut (except for the souvenir shops that is). They have a woodcarving school there that I plan to stop at for a weeklong course on the next trip. But of course it was shut that ...

... around town for the arvo, and a night in. Watched some of the elections, and woke up this morning to the news that Obama won. Planning on going up the **** today (for those who don't know, it's a mountain pronounced "Vank", not some Bavarian masturbator!), and heading up to another pub in the evening where our friend Sarah works. Only two full days left here before going on to Egypt, so will make the most of it.

... Don't Walk" or "Gehen Sie nicht" or whatever, so they didn't. I think they were ready to brand me a heretic and take me to the Inquisitors when I stepped to the edge and, after a quick glance, proceeded on my way across the intersection. Luckily, by rule, they couldn't follow to haul me in. I was two blocks away by the time the light changed. That night I had one of the best traditional German-cuisine dinners of my life. I started with Lebersknödlesuppe, followed by ...

Just like a fairytale

Another work conference for my parents brought us to Oberammergau for a week. We stayed in the cutest little wooden cottage - like the whole thing ceiling to floor and including flowering window boxes was made out of wood! Totally picturesque like you've read about in Brothers Grimm fairy tales. Aromatic town bakery. Absolutely enchanting.
