Day 33: A Great Day in Our Nation's Capital

... participant. During Georgia’s “dark days for education” at the State level with a superintendent who committed illegal and criminal acts such as firing people without cause, (she is serving time in prison for her misdeeds,) Kathleen was one of her victims. We were able to offer her a position at Georgia Tech which she accepted. She and I had the pleasure of working together ...

Washington DC

... the whole family together - it's becoming increasingly rare for that to happen. We had reservations at an Ethiopian restaurant, which is in the Ethiopian section of town. That's another fabulous thing about DC - they have an Ethiopian neighborhood full of great Ethiopian food, my favorite! We stuffed ourselves full of food and then wandered back to the hotel, where we formulated our plan for tomorrow and then collapsed into bed.

Follow me

As we criuse towards a small outlying platform we get an un expected visitor to guide our way. He is a bird from south america that has come to be our guide and lead us to safety. That is why he is sitting on the light showing us to a safe harbor as a cat 5 hurricane is just a hundred miles south of us.

Notes on the Photographs

... GMS grant award, and it sucked the life out of the batteries (and the extreme heat temporarily disabled several of our cameras) to such a degree that I lost more than a few shots just in frustration with the camera. I've tried to fill in a few gaps with borrowed pictures from my colleagues - about a dozen or so of those I've posted are not mine. Nonetheless, most of the hundreds of pictures here ARE mine, such as they ...

readings

It's finally June - the month of departure! I leave for Chicago on June 25th. As I get my medical kit, toiletries, and incidentals together, I'm still reading popular books and have added some of the books and articles on comparative education requested by our orientation staff. This blog seems as good a place as any to keep track of what I've read/am reading as I count the days to departure, but feel free to skip this if it doesn't ...

Cross Country Trip via RV

... as the west coast! Clearly we couldn't go that far. You can however drive the boat to Natural Bridge (the world largest natural bridge), but because the pool is low, you can't take the boat to it directly. You have to walk 1 ½ miles to the bridge. The marina told us that it would basically take all day to do it. We decided not to try since we got a little of a late start - we got there around 9 am. It's approximately 50 miles of boat driving to get ...

... by beautiful churches (picture in front of the Trinity Church). The mall itself is very nice, a great place to eat lunch, walk around and relax. Since it was already afternoon we decided to take the subway to the New England Aquarium. The subway is clean, easy and convenient way to get around. The subway system is easy to follow and will take you almost ...

A perfect day for Arlington Cemetery

... I'd had more time there. I would've liked to see the Iwo Jima, USMC Memorial. There's also supposed to be a monument for the victims of Pan Am Flight 103 - intended for the servicemen aboard the flight, as opposed to the Remembrance Wall in Syracuse dedicated to the SU students on that plane. But the cemetery is pretty big and I was already a little tired from having walked clear across D.C. to save myself some money (about 10 cents) on the Metro.
