... cellist was cut short when he quit the Julliard School of Music after beginning to suffer from schizophrenia. Years later, he is befriended by Steve Lopez (Downey), a journalist who is drawn one day to the sound of this man expertly playing a beaten up violin with only two strings. "A fine place to travel through"

... contains meat, chicken and cheese fantastic. Seriously, a crispy outer made of cheesy bready stuff, a layer of melted cheese... and finally your tastebuds hit upon a centre that combines, yes, chicken and cheese. Yum.

Och, the journey was fine.

Sao Paulo, ashes Wednesday

With great sadness and a bit of hangover, David and I left Rio de Janeiro they day after the Karnival was finished. As usual, there was a lot of discussion about the route to follow with plenty of different alternatives and means of transportation. In the end, we decided to stop one night in Sao Paulo in our way to the ...

Sao Paulo Rocks

... Our plan today was to do shopping, visit a supermarket and then go for a 'meat meal'. Our first stop was the Patio Higienopolis, which was a posh shopping mall close to our hotel. This was a superb, 5-storey and extremely plush mall within 5 mins walk from the hotel. We roamed around the mall and were taken aback by the incredibly high prices of everything. We bought a small Gilette shaving gel bottle which cost us 10.50 Rias (approx £3). Everything else ...

Sao Paulo

... town. This was a very successful start for us as Kieran had some Portuguese up his sleeve to get us on our merry way. The subway system here is excellent, except that there is no such thing as a day pass, only individual trips. The subway is much safer than using buses here as there are police armed with guns and night sticks everywhere. Our first stop was Praça de Se, we got a huge shock when we came out of the subway. There were lots of beggers and a bad smell ...

Staying safe in São Paulo

... and 1915, two point nine million people arrived in São Paulo searching for work. Pretty phenomenal, when you remember this was before the days of mass air travel. The various exhibits explained (unfortunately only in Portuguese) the different waves of immigration, which started with large numbers of Italians in the mid 1800s, who were followed by Spanish and Portuguese, before East Europeans and Japanese followed. More recently the newcomers are from neighbouring ...

... a ... beer beer beerrrr! 6) During the last two days we have had orientation, nothing that useful -- but the refreshments the hotel provides are pretty sweet. Little cups of really strong coffee (reaaally necessarry), avocado and mint juice, guava juice. Last night we went out to an all you can eat pizza restaurant - interestingly enough there was no regular cheese pizza. There was, however, bacon bits pizza and chicken cheesesteak pizza ( I have named these myself ...
