A Day in Glasgow

Okay, let me clarify. I know that Edinburgh is pronounced Eh-din-bur-a (that is why my last entry of "The Burgh" was so funny!!) Anyways, last Saturday I took the one hour bus ride west to Glasgow. It is more of an industrial city, better shopping, and nightlife (only I didn't go out late because I was by myself and I have to admit Bridget Jones' Diary came on t.v. and I was hooked). There is no AC anywhere in Scotland so you have to open a window at night so you don't sufficate. This proved ...

Greetings We had another great breakfast and left this magnificent Country Manor at 8am. The accommodation had been great and this was the most genteel yet. Foreign workers seem to be the norm. The grounds at this place were fantastic although it rained most of the time we were there. We left for the Isle of Skye and arrived there about 10.00am. We had had a couple of photo stops, and a Tea and rest break at Armadale. Had Scones, jam and cream. The guide has been great and has a terrific know...

Historical Traveler Reviews of Quality Central Hotel Glasgow

Loved the old world charm

from A TripAdvisor Member
before we went to scotland, i read some of the reviews on this website.

i was some what concerned as there were 10 of us going but we were all pleasantly surprised. the hotel is old and a bit in need of some tlc.

one of the reasons we booked it was because it had charm. we were not disapointed. the breakfast was huge as much to eat as we wanted. a real scottish breakfast. we had our evening meal in the hotel one night. it was real value for money as was everything about this hotel. the staff we really friendly and helpful. next time we travel to glasgow we will stay in the quality hotel

Must have been wonderful all those years ago!

Twenty four colleagues and myself booked into this hotel for a weekend break at the beginning of February. I had organised flights and hotel and what a pity I did not read the reviews on this website BEFORE I booked it!! To be fair to the hotel, I wanted 3 triple rooms and 8 twin rooms (all with single beds) and even though they did not have this exact requirement when I booked last October, they quickly organised extra beds into the larger of the twin rooms to give me what I wanted.

The room I was in was large and warm. The only problem appeared to be a rather nasty niff coming from the wardrobe. Could someone have mistaken it for the loo? Keeping the wardrobe open for the duration of our stay helped a lot! Most of my friends found themselves in FREEZING rooms though! After asking that something be done with the heating, some found an improvement but many did not. Some of my party slept fully clothed whilst others actually kept their coats on all night! After trying to fix the heating in one room (and failing), the member of staff insisted that they ring down if they had any further problems!

That would have been a good idea if only the telephone in the room had been working!!Breakfast was adequate. On the Saturday evening, large groups of youths sat around all up the magnificent staircase eating fast-food and stubbing out cigarettes on the marble stairs. The noise levels at this time were rather high. Bathrooms were not very clean and the grouting between the tiles was black. It certainly didn't encourage you to linger in the bath. A quick shower was the order of the day.

Despite everything, we had a great weekend and the location of this hotel for such a large group was superb. We all commented what a lovely hotel it must have been in its heyday but sadly, it now looks sadly neglected.

Quality Hotel - What a Joke

from A TripAdvisor Member
As I am from Glasgow I have wanted to stay in the hotel for a number of years, so for my Christmas my Fiance booked us for New Year (31/12/03 - 01/01/04). Looking at the web site the rooms looked nice with lovely bathrooms so we took with us wine, bubbles etc for a romantic New Year's day recovering. We arrived on a very wet Hogmany looking forward to the break, the lobby was very grand, so far so good. We eventually got in our room and what a disappointment, it was a single room with a double bed squashed in the corner. It was very drab and as for the bathroom, it had no floor covering, a net curtain covering the bottom of the window as old as the hotel (it may have been pink) and a stark fluorescent light, so much for romance! The room was freezing cold, they made a good show of fixing the heating, but a show was all it was.

We took a look at the leisure suite along a cold concrete corridor in the basement, to find a pool no bigger than a bird bath we decided against using it over the stay, didn't fancy the walk along the corridor again. It was very off putting to say the least.

All in all a disappointment, I can't comment on breakfast as we never made it, but the bar was okish except the barman wanted to serve a delux malt in a tumbler. I won't be back, I'm just sorry what was a insitutation of Glasgow has gone so far down hill and with all the new luxury hotels opening up it best buck up its ideas fast.

Loved it!

Myself and two friends stayed here just after christmas this year for the weekend. We checked in extremely early - 10am, and found the hotel receptionist very friendly and helpful, allowing us to check in immediately. Our room was basic, but large and clean, with very high ceilings and the decor was fine as we were in a refurbished room. The windows overlooked the train station which we found quirky but were worried that it might be nosiy but the orginal windows and double glazing sorted that out. The staff were helful and I would have no hesitation in returning again to this hotel or recommending it to friends. As for location, you couldn't ask for more central as you are within walking distance of shops, bars, restaurants. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there!

Budget Hotel

from A TripAdvisor Member
After reading some of the previous reviews of this hotel I wasn't looking forward to our stay. However it turned out to be ok for a budget hotel. The rooms, although in dire need of re-decoration, were clean and well sized. Breakfast was ok but i would not recommend dinner as the food was all overcooked and barely warm when served. If you just want a cheap, clean room for the night then this would be ok.

Oh dear!

How you find this hotel depends what your expectations are! Over the ten years we have been using it for weekend breaks, it has delighted and charmed us as many times as it has outraged us!

We have had the experience of a tiny noisy room, previously inhabited by someone who apparently smoked ALL the time, however when we asked to be moved, we were moved.

We also one memorable year ordered a bottle of champagne to be brought up to our room - and that's exactly what we got! ie no glasses.

However we have bumped into some extraordinary characters there over the year, the best being the Highlander convention with a full dress ball in the impressive ballroom on the Sat evening.

It is in a brilliant setting, so close to the heart of the city you can walk practically everywhere. A previous reviewer has missed the point that it is in fact a Victorian railway hotel and that's the POINT of the close connection with the station. And we usually ask for a room overlooking the station or the concourse.

Luxury it's not. Quirky, faded grandeur it is, and if you accept it for that, you'll enjoy it!

Comfortable stay

my fiancee and i stayed in this hotel the weekend before christmas 2002. We went to glasgow for the weekend, and we throughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel.

okay the rooms are in need of some upgrading, but they were clean and comfortable. We were high up so we had an amazing view over the city.

The staff were friendly and very helpful. we were meant to check in at 2pm, but because we were going to a pantomine at 2pm, we thought we chance our luck and check in early. This was no problem, and we checked in at 12.00.

The hotel was very busy(as it was the weekend before xmas) but the service and quality of this hotel was still good.

I would go back to this hotel, its not the hilton, but its comfortable, great location and value for money

Absolute garbage

from A TripAdvisor Member
We stayed in this hotel one Friday niight as we were going to a wedding, the room was disgraceful the sheet were all stained and when asking for an iron and ironing board the following morning we were told that we could not get one very abruptly and when calling again we were again told that no iron'e were to go to the room we asked if there was a room were we could go to iron we were told no, on my boyfriend calling down to complain about this he was then told to go to the 5th floor were there was one set up, the service was out ragious, never again and I will never recommend this hotel.

On going down to the swimming pool area it was a really smelly corrodor leading to it and when arriving the pool wasn't anymore than what I could have swam in in the bath.

Totally disappointed, quality I don't think so.

This hotel has seen its day!

I stayed here for a few nights around new year's eve/day (2002/2003). I could tell that this "Quality" hotel was once a spectacular place to stay in. No more! It is right next to (almost on top of!) Glasgow's Central train station (not to be confused with the Queen Street train station a few blocks away), and the Hotel has very big hallways, plenty of conference, restaurant, and bar space, and my room had probably the highest ceiling of any hotel room I have ever stayed in. This hotel, which even has a direct entrance to the train station, has plenty of charm. That's about where the pluses of this old hotel end. This historic hotel could possibly be renovated into a very worthwhile place to stay at, if one knew what they were doing, and put enough money into it. The staff cared, and tried, but DIDN'T come through. the food was bad, and the service was bad (even though I was very willing to pay whatever the cost was, they were VERY reluctant to even bring food up to my room when I called down for room service). This hotel is right in the center of downtown Glasgow, so the location is perfect. I walked around the hotel, and some of the hallways were not even lit (dark walking through there!), and it looked like the staff had simply "closed off" (neglected) areas of this large hotel, until they got around to cleaning them up and renting those rooms!!. The only other "user review" I have seen here on TripAdvisor.Com about this hotel summed it quite accurately---avoid this hotel! IF they ever clean it up, I'll stay there again!!

Could do much better

from A TripAdvisor Member
This was my first time at a "Quality" hotel. It did not live up to the name. Room was reasonably sized but bathroom had seen much better (and cleaner!) days. Decor was worn and tired. Pillows were disgusting and brown.Landings and lobbys were generally tidy but there was one noticable item of concern. Along our floor (3rd floor) there were a number of doors marked "fire door, keep locked". Not only were these doors not locked, but mainly they led to cupboards full of dirty/bust matresses and other (disgusting) fire hazards - rather worrying. At least one of the auto-closing doors along the corridor was also propped open so would not have activated in the event of a fire.Breakfast was acceptable - although every day had to wait for a table even though the restaurant was not full. I was not enticed to try any other meals at this hotel. The other facilities were not up to scratch - the bar was small, horrible and generally seemed to be full of local drunks rather than residents. Overall, even with a good deal on rooms (which I had) I would not return to this hotel. There is much better out there. AVOID.
