The Best Western Springfield served up a basic breakfast. Mark tucked into his sausage patties and scrambled eggs, I decided to stick to the toast!!

We successfully managed to get onto Route 66 quite quickly and made our way towards the state line into Oklahoma State.

... when it was built in the 60's the Americans were less, erm...... Chubby! It was a tad cosy! We shared our capsule with a lovely lady called Joyce. She was on a coach tour across Route 66 and was from Boston (Massachusetts). Joyce and I did NOT enjoy the journey up. Mark found it fascinating and kept looking down at the mechanics whilst Joyce and I covered our eyes!! We eventually got to the top after what felt a very long 4 minutes and exited ...

... no more!!!!! We stopped at a few little places along the way, but we are all disappointed in the so called "highlights" of Route 66! Mostly they are old servos or motels with broken signs etc and maybe a shop selling junk momentos! Over dinner at our stop in Springfield - yep that's Simpson country - we all agreed that we might take a few detours along the way and visit some other landmarks instead of sticking rigidly to the ...

... for minor roads wherever possible and practical, and sometimes I think I also do it unconsciously.

I was on a southbound hwy so I figured it would all work out in the end. I had driven out of the
rain and it was quite hot so I stopped at a gas station in the obscure town of Rich Hill for a beverage and a map check. Rich Hill was at a crossroads of two routes called 'A' & 'B'.
