We also managed to enjoy the relative coolness of the four large exhibitor hangars and made contact with vendors we had met and dealt with in the past. We toured the vast site including reaching the extreme southern end in search of some intrepid travellers from the Isle of Man –but unfortunately they weren't at their aircraft. An enjoyable side trip was taken to the Floatplane Base on Lake Winnebago. ...

Overnight in Appleton

Well, we headed this way so we could spend the night and take a Lake Michigan ferry across to Michigan.

Unfortunately, the only reservations available are either VERY early (6 AM) or VERY LATE (7 PM) so we're having dinner to discuss.

The other real problem is:

  • The ferry leaving that's closest to us is an old model and take 5.5 hours.
  • The ferry leaving 2 hrs south of us is a jet ferry ...

The highlight of our two days was the night airshow on Wednesday - no photos (too hard) but there were some stunning aerobatics including a glider with fireworks streaming from its wingtips, 3 T6 Texans lit up like Christmas trees doing formation aerobatics, several other great displays and concluding with a big fireworks display.

Inbound Ripon It is always amazing how Air Traffic Controllers handling the masses of about 10000 Airplanes All competing for the same piece of Pavement at Oshkosh's yearly Air Venture week. Rolling out on RWY 36 brought me right to the turnoff where I parked at the Race Tent , my Friends from Spruce Creek had reserved me a space there since I arrived 1 Day late do to the delay in Japan. ... to take us into town to stock up on those essentials for camping we couldn’t bring and also taking the opportunity to buy some temperature-appropriate clothing.

We’d just finished our supper when Vernon (another Defiant owner) joined us after a 12 hr drive from the Carolinas. We found out that the gate nearest the camping area closed at 2230 hrs – Steve had dropped us off with five minutes to spare!
