At the brink of complete despair, a sailor found at night a dot of fire in the distance. He then shouted excited to all the others:"We are saved! We are saved!" This slightest gleam of hope encouraged all the people onboard.

Childrens day

... of school came on and sat in a row with red scarf's tied round their necks and talked for nearly an hour about god knows what (one of the lowlights) I also got to hear Auld Lang Syne in Korean, Chinese and English, however no one seems to believe me that this was a Scottish song and they think Im just a crazy Scottish person. The highlight of the day had to be the primary 4 kids dancing around in red army uniforms. My time in Yantai so far

... in true frustrated teacher fashion) Spoken in rapid Glaswegian though, so as not to actually be understood. And of course they just continued to stare blankly. The fact that I have difficulty with they're facial expressions seems to work both ways, they cannot read mine either so it took them around a minute to figure out I was angry. I have also been discovering that around half of the middle school boys do not speak English, and this is accepted by the teachers which makes ...

Giant Budda and 1st evening on the tiles

Hey hey we'r the monkeys Today I took the bus with ben to Nanshan(around 1 hour south west of Yantai) where he was getting his tattoo finished (a bamboo forest on his calf) to see the famous Nanshan Grand Budda statue of Sakyamumi. Its 40 meters tall, weighs 380 tons and is made of bronze and tin. It really was an incredible sight and was surrounded by amazing views, many temples, pagodas and ancient gardens. It took a ...

Farewell Yantai

Well I'm in Taiyuan now, having said my fond farewells to Yantai, so thought I better update you briefly on the events on the last few weeks. Sorry about all the drinking parents, too many goodbyes to say! Um, well after returning from my travels we had the joy of a week of saying goodbye to Alex and Emily in various guises. We went for an amazing meal the night before they left at a restaurant where u could basically pick anything you wanted to eat, it was very ...

Celeb spotting.... Me!

Well I have now reached a level of fame of truly epic proportions. After being snapped having a picnic last week and being put in the paper to show how truly beautiful the weather was if Westerners could bring themselves to venture outside, I have now got my very own article! Of course I wasn't warned about this until the journalist had turned up at the school, and I suddenly had to pretend teach a class who were in the middle of ...

She dreams of cheese....

Hello! Yes sadly the dreams about finding a cheese shop are getting more and more frequent... For those of you who think I've gone mad (well I probably have) the sad truth is they don't eat cheese out here and I miss it. The only 'cheese' they have resembles diarylee which is tragic! I've heard rumours of an out of town shop that may stock cheese, I think a trip is sorely needed! Anyway I'm also yearning after water! Yes that fundamental element that I currently ...

Elegant cuisine in Yantai...

Hello its me again, back with some joyful tales of China. I have now finished my second week of teaching and all is going well, the kids even seem to be listening, and I've been causing a few stirs as I do things like flash round pictures of the 'Elephant Man' during my Senior class. I'm not sure they were really prepared for that one! But equally, as I've been ...
