... are ancient bell guard towers, that used to watch for intruders. When I think of a city in China, Xi'an is what I imagine it should look like. Of course, there are still the high rises and condos outside the walls, but the government has limited the height of all buildings inside the walls so as not to ruin the beauty of the city.

... hostel, which was spitting distance from the Southgateof the wall. At 1Yuan (10pence) the bus was a real bargain and nowonder it is the most popular form of transport in this studentridden city. More friendly Chinese people here; as soon as Amuthamade to pick up her bag before alighting the bus, the nearest girlhelped me by lifting it onto her shoulders. "Bu Xie" (No thanks) was her response to my "xie xie". They really don'texpect that kind of spoken gratitude ...

... that aligns east to west towards mecca. It has beautiful architecture and carvings throughout. Just outside the mosque is the muslim market where goods can be bought for a negotiated price. Mark tries his haggle skills at some of the stalls, but I have to urge him to go lower. I think he is happy with his purchases.

... them warm so they didn't die. Very sweet. All the apples we saw hanging from the trees were also carefully wrapped in little polythene bags to keep the moisture in - now thats dedication.

A nice finish to the day was provided when we were able to book our tickets to the Panda place at Chengdu (pronounced Chung-du) and finally we will get to experience soft sleeper travel - in different cabins from one another...so close to gettting it ...
