... a desolate city would be quiet and tranquil. This, however, is not the case! All is a big build up to the final hours before the new year. The city is cover in a hazy cloud of smoke. Not the general acrid smog that hangs like a pillow over the face of every big city in China. The sweet and sulphureous small of Gunpowder and fireworks! A week before the time the city lights up with the constant booming, popping and whizzing sounds of fireworks. Crackers go off ...

... we stopped at the pharmacy to pick up the medicine Georgie had been prescribed before going back to campus in the taxi. This whole process only took about an hour from hospital registration to leaving with a foot in plaster, a much more efficient process than A & E at home... It was nice to relax after such a hectic 10 days although the pizza took a very long time ...

We got back to campus in time for a quick lunch and headed to the teaching buildings for our first proper lecture, another shock to the system as it was delivered almost entirely in rapid fire Chinese! ... for different things within the compound - lots of ponds and gaps between the buildings in case of fire etc.  We were then taken to a snack street where I introduced everyone to a pretty reliable snack - peanuts cooked and set in a sweet caramelly sauce. When we completed the tour we got back on the bus and persuaded the vis-a-vis people to drop us at InCity, a big shopping centre in the city centre, so we could have ...

... As we drove onto the bridge the far end was lost in cloud (probably actually just more smog...) and we couldn't see it until we were well over half way across! A car with a puncture led to some emergency braking on what was essentially a motorway, but we were all fine and continued on our way once they'd pulled over to the hard shoulder. The whole of the back row (Molly, Juliet and a Finnish girl called Riina) had slept for most of the way but as we approached ...
