This morning we take the Yamanoto Line to Tokyo station where we transfer to the Superview Odoriko train to Atami on the Izu Peninsula, about 90 min by train. Many train lines in Japan have their own jingle playing on the station and by now we know the Yamanoto jingle by heart. This upbeat tune sometimes plays in your head all day ;-) We have seats in the first car of the Superview Odoriko train, the seats are right behind the driver ...

... to a shabu-shabu restaurant close to the hotel. All you can eat pork or beef, plus a self-serve vegetable bar After dinner we met Riko Oyama and her mother Teruyo in the lobby of the hotel. Yuko and Chiyoko met us a little later. It was great to see Riko and Chiyoko - they have grown so much and they are developing into such beautiful young girls. We got into Yuko's car and she drove for about 30 minutes to a beautiful new hotel called Teranomon Hills, the ...

... grounds is prohibited, but the East gardens of the Imperial complex is open to the public, so we made the most of this. The gardens are picturesque in all the ways you`d expect of a Japanese garden: calm, with a small waterfall flowing into a pool of brightly coloured carp. All this with Tokyo`s impressive urban centre towering in the background, you get a real sense of Japan present and past wandering in the gardens.
Ginza is Tokyo`s answer to Oxford street. We headed there on ...

Mt Fuji

Using information gleaned from our Japan by rail guidebook we made our way to Mishima station by bullet train in order to get as close as we could for a good view of Mount Fuji. This time we actually saw it from the train and also got a good view from the bus over to Motohakone. Getting off the bus I took a couple of great photos but then a pirate-looking ship was setting off across the lake and we jumped on that, not realising that that would be the end of our views until ...
