Well we made it here. Let me just start by saying never fly China airlines. The longest leg of our trip was a 13 hour flight from San Francisco to Taiwan, and there was only a huge shared video screen circa 1970's with whatever movie they showed to everyone with subtitles, and the video on my side didn't even work. The only good thing was we had a bank of 4 seats between the 2 of us. The food was the worst by far of any airline food I have ever had. Once in Taiwan we had a 4 hour layover, th...
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia 2009balitripFriday was not quite as much an adventure. We were slow to get going as Gary works so late trading. We decided to have a restful day and explore Ubud. We started by booking massages. I had a Thai reflexology and Gary a regular massage. They came and picked us up from our hotel and then lead us down this little alley back to the spa place. The reflexology hurt more than I thought it would but was just the thing to "bring me into balance". I felt really great (no jet lag) afterwards. It cost u...
ubud, Bali, Indonesia 2009balitripWe happen to be in Bali during the cremation season. Tuesday is the big cremation ceremony, and many activities surround this event. When someone dies in Bali they place their body in the family compound and wait until the "priest" says it is a good time to bury them. The person is then buried and after 5 years when the body has decayed they dig up the bones and cremate them in a large group and ceremony together. There traditions are said to save money. We have seen all sorts of activities ...
Ubud, Bali, Indonesia 2009balitrip Monday was full of surprises as Gary could not log the computers on to the internet early in the day, so we were having a bit of an emergency.Magically everything was ok again after hours of panic.
Our plan was to take a drive out and see the Elephant caves. It is not that far our of town and there were several other places to check out beyond that depending on time. On our way out of town, traffic came to a complete stop as a procession was taking place involving a large animal "float"...

Ubud, Bali, Indonesia elgrillo... More often than not, there are one or two Ritz crackers set on the very top; · It has been a little unsettling to be staying in a town that has been rocked by terrorist bombings (aimed at foreigners). In both 2002 and 2005 there were bombs that killed more than 200 people including 2 Canadians. In both instances, the bombs went off in restaurants frequented by tourists, just like the ones we have been eating in. It was also sobering to stand at the ...
Kuta, Bali, Indonesia elopfamily... available the following day, this did not make me very happy. Fortunately at least Lisa got her account unlocked, so we were able to transfer money to our credit cards and then go to a familiar ATM to withdraw 3,000,000 Rp at a time. Not knowing when we would have access to another good ATM, we used it three times to get 9,000,000 (at a cost of 300,000 Rp.) Hopefully this will be all the Indonesian currency we need for the rest of our time in the country. We spent ...
Padangbai, Bali, Indonesia aaronpolarbear... and turned around with a cocky smile on his face and I was stood there absolutely tamping with rage! A little later another girl supported me, but as we got nearer the end of the passengers, our queue, which was the slowest, dispersed into the other, faster queues and all his hard work was for nothing! Ha! He still got through ahead of me though, as I was the last person stood waiting, but at least I have my morals! Right at the end, 5 girls travelling separately were ...
Kuta, Bali, Indonesia becpowell... and languages, everything we've created, from basic wheel to nano-tech, because that is what defines us. If you are trying to pretend to be someone else - you are lost - you are loosing yourself in a sea of changes - the only constant thing in this universe :) Yea, that IS my passion. LIFE :) (oh, and TRAVEL - which for me is LIFE) Being alone makes you realize many things ... like what you love and what you hate... and what it's worth living for. Basics is the key :)
Kuta, Bali, Indonesia zalazala... then in the room. Had more of the Soto Ayam soup. We ended up watching a movie, then sleeping early in prep for sailing the next day. Next day came and Sherry's stomach was worse, so we cancelled the trip. I walked about Kuta area for awhile, then grabbed some rays by the pool in the afternoon. Just hung out and popped out to the pharmacy to grab some pills for Sherry. Laid low and ended up getting some rain. Heard a bunch of thunder in the middle of the ...
