Trail? What trail?

... only by tin sheets, and inside lived the entire family plus whatever livestock they owned. Malnourished babies and puppies crawled on dirt floors, competing for speed against ducks, chickens and pigs. It is homes like these that motivate governments to pay for vaccines, because without them, most of these children would not make it to their first birthdays given the living conditions.
Any children who were not up to date on their ...

Ometepe and bedbugs

... we also had a TV in the cabin. Half an hour into the ride the TV sprang to life, blasting the most absolutely hideous and annoying music videos I’ve ever seen (and heard!)
There were about 12 people in the upper cabin with us, dozing away. Within two minutes everyone was awake and leaving to sit outside. I got up and turned the TV down a few notches and put on my headphones, trying to drown out the sound. No luck. I don’t remember the name of the musician ...

My nightmare… came to life.

... place? There was like no normal civilization… other than the random huts and live stock on the side of the road. So I asked my teacher how he found this place, and he said Lonely Planet……. GREAT beginning…. Could you imagine my excitement?

So then we pull into this foresty looking place. We get out of the car and immediately you could feel the bugs around you. We then divided up into rooms and I, Diana, Courtney, and Emilee got #15&#8230 ...

Ecolodge ..very funny

Wow check out the ECO lodge..... I mean really really CHECK them out at TOTOCO Ecoblahblah! !
The irony is that there is no eco lodge - they have ripped off the land from local families, have illegally harvested wood for building, paid local people to haul huge rocks for a daily wage of US$2 .....etc....
oh and the local community water lines the ECO barrons have connected to them illegally!!! They have promised money but keep stalling ...

Not in love boat

... door open so that all the flies came in. These are special flies, like biting clouds, relentless. There were hundreds of them. Actually, the best place to be on that boat was lying on the cargo. That'll teach me to spend money. 10hours later and no sleep we arrived at the port of San Carlos at 5.30am. I hadn't done my homework. Paul informed me that to get to the next town we had to jump on another boat for 3 and a half hours. This was supposed to be ...

Ometepe Island Day 3

... or trees and roots and **** and basically we were on our hands and knees at a 45 degree angle the entire time. it felt like we were climbing a tree the entire way up - there were several spots that were vertical and we had to climb the roots like a ladder for 10ft or so. so the 100% humidity meant you were sweating like a crazy person and the sweat didn't evaporate - so i had to literally wring my shirt out several times. my pants were soaked as ...

Twin peaks

Everyone rages about this place. It's an island formed by two volcanoes in the middle of enormous Lake Nicaragua. I can't get my head around just how big that lake is. You take a 'ferry' - it's a loose term as the boat is practically sinking, the passengers sit next to the engine with a guy changing speeds after the capitan rings a bell - and for an hour and half you wipe the water out of your eyes as you glare at the incredible view. We were very lucky to meet up with some other ...

The worst place to be sick

This place means ´white rocks´. Although we didn´t see any, mainly because it rained and was cloudy for the whole time we were there and also because we were both sick as dogs. This is why you shouldn´t go against the coin of destiny. It told us not to go but we ignored its ruling and this is what happened. ... We checked in to the ´eco lodge´ with the rain pouring down on us while a surly man who spoke with his mouth closed showed ...

Lesson 42 - don´t ignore the coin of destiny

Mm, where to go next. We could go south to Matagalpa or we could go óff guide´ and head for the hills of the Bosawas Reserve known as a stronghold in the Contra War and also for it´s pretty scenery. Since noone in the alledged tourist office wanted to give us any information we tossed a coin. It landed on Matagalpa. We thought, that´s a bit boring, so got on a bus to El Cua. Four hours on a chicken bus into the hills ...

Two brothels, a BBQ and a dwarf

With a dutch couple we jumped on the local bus to Jinotega, at the foot of the coffee plantations. It´s not quite what we had in mind. The ´nicest´ hotel was about 16 dollars and was undergoing renovations. We couldn´t quite understand why he was still even open nevermind charging that much and in the typical latin american way refused to negotiate on price. It was Sunday. The town was dead. We had a buffet lunch ...
